TKU PRESIDENT ALONG WITH OTHER 26 HEADS OF UNIVERSITIES SUBMIT SUGGESTIONS TO GOVERNMENT

Tamkang University (TKU) President Chang Horng-jinh and 26 heads or ex-heads of universities around Taiwan issued a joint statement on May 8, 2003, pointing out that facing SARS, we need a strong and powerful commanding center. They stressed that the government should unify together to provide complete information so as to jointly fight against this ever-found epidemic.

TKU PRESIDENT URGES ALL FACULTY AND STUDENTS TO FACE SARS IN REASON

Tamkang University (TKU) President Chang Horng-jinh wrote a letter to all faculty, staff and students on May 5, 2003 in which Chang stressed that school authorities have already adopted a series of countermeasures to prevent the epidemic severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS) from further spreading and to ensure the health and safety of all members of TKU family.

TKU authorities have decided to fumigate the Communication Hall and Chemistry Hall. 39 teachers and students of Departments of Mass Communication and of Information and Communication (DIC) are under 10-day home quarantine until May 14 shortly after knowing that an assistant of Department of Mass Communication (DMC) was diagnosed as a SARS suspect when she was hospitalized at Mackay Memorial Hospital at Tamsui.

“I don’t want to return to Japan,” Yuichi Yamashita of Chuo Gakuin University who is taking part in the student exchange program in Tamkang University (TKU) said good bye to his roommates before departing at Chiang Kai-shek International Airport. Due to the epidemic SARS, parents of foreign students under exchange program worried about the safety of their children and under the request of their alma mater, a lot of foreign students returned to their home countries. However, a few students insisted to stay in TKU to continue their learning courses.
