CELEBRATING THE 56TH ANNIVERSARY AT TAMSUI AND LANYANG CAMPUSES:SPORTS EVENTS AND ARTS EXHIBITION

To celebrate the 56th anniversary of Tamkang University and the first anniversary of her Shao-mo Memorial Gymnasium and the recruitment of student in Lanyang campus, various sports events were held at Tamsui campus last Saturday, and a fine arts exhibition took place at Lanyang campus since November 4.

EPIGRAPH FOR THE CONSTRUCTION OF SHAO-MO MEMORIAL GYMNASIUM

The construction of Shao-mo Memorial Gymnasium was originally planned with Shao-mo Memorial Natatorium Complex to glorify my father’s immense contribution to establishing Tamkang University and his lifelong practice of the five educational principles of virtue, intellect, strength, community and beauty. My father was ex-vice President Yuan-tzu Lee’s close friend, who was invited to write on the foundational stone of the gymnasium on November 6th 1999. The gymnasium is about 256,127 square feet divided into three basketball yards and three volleyball yards, five badminton yards, and several classrooms for judo and martial arts, fitness training, gymnastics, table tennis and general classrooms. It also includes 87 offices of student clubs and associations, a space of 11,386 square feet in total for students’ extracurricular activities. School’s large-sized activities, national and international conferences can be held inside the gymnasium, with the maximal accommodation of 3000 people. Therefore, the gymnasium is a building of multiple functions symbolizing Tamkang’s education of “strength” and “community.” The construction started in 2004 and lasted for two years. There are eight stories on the ground and one story underground. The exterior is built with glass with the tint corresponding to that of Natatorium Complex. The designing and supervision of the construction was entrusted to Sho-chung Huang’s architectural office. The spending was above one billion dollars. The building sits on the north and faces the south with magnificent vigor and advanced, perfect facilities. Tamkang is progressing the fourth wave and accumulating more dintinguished academic achievements; therefore, the completion of Shao-mo Memorial Gymnasium, in following up Carrie Chang Fine Arts Center, Carrie Chang Music Hall, and Shao-mo Memorial Natatorium Complex, symbolizes Tamkang’s perfection in the software and hardware of the five education principles of virtue, intellect, strength, community and beauty. He always works harder than others because he thinks he is not smart enough. Chen testifies the saying that “diligence makes up one’s dullness” by his example—though he took one more year to finish both junior high school and high school, he acquired a Ph. D degree.

APPLYING HIS LEARNED SKILLS IN TO SERVE AS VICE COUNTY MAYOR:

“Because I grow up in Taitung, without any hesitation I decided to work for National Dong Hwa University in eastern Taiwan once I got back from overseas studies,” says with a smile by Chu Jing-pong, current Secretary General of National Dong Hwa University. Chu graduated from the Graduate Institute of European Studies in TKU in 1988. Most of students usually took 3 years to finish the program at that time; however, Chu took only 2 years with the best record in that institute.

TIAN CHUNG-WANG IS DEVOTED TO TEACHING CHINESE FOR OVERSEAS CHINESE CHILDREN

Although English is the current dominating language, more and more people perceive the important role of Chinese in the future. While most of people rush to learn English, Tian Chung-wang, President of Chinese School, Alumni Association of Taiwan Colleges in West Canada, is leading a crew to teach Chinese to overseas Chinese children during the weekends. Hearing that he is bestowed the Golden Eagle Awards from TKU, Tian is very surprised and pleased. He said, “Getting this honor from my alma mater really means a lot to me.”

CHILLING UP ALONG THE RIVERSIDE TOURING IN CAMPUS ALUMNI HAVING FUN

The National Alumnus Federation held the 2nd Session of the 5th member's representative assembly in Kaohsjung palace of Japanese food last Saturday (the 28th ) for warming up the 56th school anniversary. The event was held by president of The National Alumnus Federation, Chen Ching-Nan, and invited the school presient and Director of Alumnus' Service and also the dean of Resource Development, Chen Min-Nan. They decided to move the event to Lanyang campus hosted by Shu Cheung-Ron, the president of Ilan Alumnus Association and give the tour there next year.

EIGHT EXCHANGED STUDENTS RETURNING BACK HOME FROM ZHEJIANG UNIVERSITY NEXT FRIDAY

Since Department of International Business carried on plans of exchanging across strait with ZheJiang University last year, the plan runs again this year. 8 students elected from the Zhejiang University came to visit TKU for 2-month academic exchange on September 10th, and will return to China on the 10th November. 4 TKU exchanging students from Department of International Business will also finish 3-month exchange and come back to Taiwan in mid December. The exchange program is supported and assisted by both Special Projects of Academic Cooperation and the Office of Student Affair. '”The two-month program will fly by very soon. We really appreciate TKU’s teachers and students being very nice to us”, said Chi Ting, an exchange student from ZheJiang University. Kim Cha-Cha also said, “I got used to everything very well because Taiwan and Mainland are similar.” Students loved the Taiwanese food here. They gained some weight during the 2-month staying. Cheung Shu-Dong said,”2 classes are conduced in English only. It was difficult for us at first, but we got used to it now.”
