Department of Architecture Alumnus Gains International Recognition

Over the past several decades, the TKU Department of Architecture has produced a vast pool of talented architects and designers. One such architect, in particular, has scaled the heights of the design world and was recently named the grand prize winner of the Curry Stone Design Prize. In being awarded this honor, TKU alumnus Hsieh Ying-chun became the first Curry Stone major prize winner of Asian descent, and will receive a US $100,000 cash prize at an awards ceremony to be held October 7 at the Harvard University Graduate School of Design.

The 2011 UIA Student Competition

Three master’s students from the TKU Department of Architecture recently received awards for “outstanding entries” in the 2011 UIA Student Competition. The students – Zhuang Zheng-xin, Yan Ding-cheng, and Chen Ji-wen – formulated a ‘New Ecology Architectural Plan for Inashiki City, Japan’, which coincided with the theme of the competition: ‘Designing the Future: Architecture in 2050’. The students envisaged an environmentally sustainable ecosystem that incorporates rice paddies, residential areas, and livestock.

Tamkang Holds the Seminar on Instructional and Administrative Reform

This year’s Seminar on Instructional and Administrative Reform was held on the 14th October. It discussed practical strategies and methods for enhancing the recruitment of Mainland Chinese students.

Talking Tamkang at High Schools around Taiwan

On the 5th October, a group of TKU students and staff set out for Yuanlin in Central Taiwan. The group was made up of staff from the TKU Recruitment Section, Office of Academic Affairs, and students from the ‘Tamkang Recruitment Volunteer Team’ and the TKU Yuanlin High School Alumni Association.

Tamkang Alumnus Voted President of Dong Hwa

Professor Wu Maw Kuen, TKU Department of Physics alumnus and former recipient of the Golden Eagle Award, was recently elected President of National Dong Hwa University. Professor Wu commented that he hopes to promote an atmosphere of warmth and closeness at the university, and transfer it into a comfortable haven where students, faculty and visiting scholars can feel at home. He also intends to enhance Dong Hwa’s facilities so that students may have access to leading educational resources.

An Inspiring Visit from Athlete, Singer, and Artist Lena Maria

An Olympic athlete, singer, artist and author recently visited the TKU Tamsui Campus. Lena Maria was born in Sweden with no arms and one leg half the length of the other. She was invited to Taiwan to attend the Republic of China’s centennial celebrations. During her stay, she only made one visit to a Taiwanese university, coming to the TKU Center of Resources for the Blind on October 12. At TKU, she took part in an informal discussion and commended Tamkang for the strong emphasis it places on the blind and disabled.

Tamkang Freshmen Serving the Community

Each year, as part of the Tamsui International Environmental Arts Festival, Danshui citizens reenact a play known as the “Legend of Sino-French War”, which depicts a battle that broke out as France attacked China in 1884.
