REPRIMAND CANCELLATION WITH RETROSPECTIVE EFFECT FROM SEP. 2000

The Guidance Section of the Office of Student Affairs announced last Thursday (April 14) a change in the non-retrospective rule of the reprimand cancellation regulations. The regulations are now with retrospective effect from September 2000 and applicable to even the seniors. Application for reprimand cancellation is now open until May 6.

The reprimand cancellation regulations have taken effect since the start of this semester, but few students have taken advantage of this opportunity to erase disciplinary reprimands from their records. For instance, over 200 students received a minor reprimand for failing to complete registration on time; among them only about a dozen have so far applied for reprimand cancellation. After careful consideration of the amount of administrative work involved, the Guidance Section have decided to move reprimand cancellation regulations retrospectively to September 2000 so as to give more students the opportunity to mend their ways.

Students who, since September 2000, have received a disciplinary reprimand (except the most serious reprimand) for misconduct and would promise not to repeat the misconduct may fill out an application form for reprimand cancellation. The application form has to be signed by the applicant’s parent or guardian, examined by his/her faculty advisor, military training officer, or department chair, and approved by the Office of Student Affairs. The Guidance Section will then assign community service tasks to the applicants, whose work will be supervised and assessed by relevant personnel. After receiving satisfactory reports on the students’ community service, the Guidance Section will cancel their reprimands.

The chief of the Guidance Section, Ms. Kao Yu-yen, stressed that the original reprimand cancellation regulations apply to disciplinary cases of this semester: application for cancellation is open for two weeks following the student’s receipt of the notice of reprimand. According to the regulations, every student is allowed only one chance of reprimand cancellation; the reason behind this rule is to remind students not to repeat their misconduct.

The Guidance Section offers applicants of reprimand cancellation the following community service options: campus cleaning (part of the service education led by military training officers), one-day service organized by the Extracurricular Activities Guidance Section, traffic warden service outside the campus, etc. To cancel a minor reprimand, a student needs to do six hours’ worth of service, and, for a more serious reprimand, eighteen hours.
