According to the “Recognition Ranking of Engineering and Business Majors” in 2008 Introduction to the Best Graduate Institutes in Taiwan, published by Cheers magazine on 2007, 9, 18, eight TKU graduate institutes (including Dept. of Architecture) were ranked as “The Best,” and seven (including Graduate Institute of Educational Psychology and Counseling) were graded as “Remarkable.” The magazine guide cites the 2005 and 2006 research reports “Recognition Ranking of Engineering and Business Majors in Taiwan Universities” by Dr. Hou Yung-chi, Associate Professor of Graduate Institute of Higher Education, TKU, and analyzes the academic achievements of three Engineering majors and four Business majors. The eight TKU institutes ranked as “The Best” include Graduate Institutes of Civil Engineering, Water Resource and Environmental Engineering, Architecture, Industrial Economics, Accounting, Banking and Finance, Insurance, and International Trade. Among them, Graduate Institutes of Civil Engineering, Water Resource, Industrial Economics are evaluated as No. 1 in private universities, whereas Architecture is ranked as No. 3 among all Taiwan universities.
In addition, the Cheers guide classifies all institutes into seven categories—Mechanic Information, Engineering, Natural Science, Medicine, Social Science And Education, Business And Management, And Liberal Arts—and ranks the “remarkable” institutes according to the rate of acceptance, the total number of enrollment, and the total number of replacement from 2004 to 2007. The seven TKU institutes ranked among the “Remarkable” list includes Division of Structure of Graduate Institute of Civil Engineering, Division A of Institute of Chemistry, Institute of Educational Psychology and Counseling, Mass Communication, Division of Banking and Finance of Institute of Banking and Finance, Division A of Institute of Information Management, and Division of English and American Literature of Graduate Program, Dept. of English. Among them, Division A of Institute of Chemistry, Institute of Educational Psychology and Counseling, and Division of English and American Literature of Graduate Program, Dept. of English are the only private university on the list.
Graduate Institute of Educational Psychology and Counseling is well known in fostering counseling experts. Graduate Institute of Mass Communication is noted in the fields of Media Language, Marketing Communication, and Global Communication. Graduate Institute of Banking and Finance is oldest of this kind in Taiwan, and distinguishes itself with the cross benefiting communication between the EMBA students’ business experience and the normal students’ writing expertise, which combines theories with practices.
Graduate Institute of Information Management emphasizes on thesis publication and the operation of information system. Division of English and American Literature of Graduate Program, Dept. of English is remarkable in the field of Literature and Environment, and Film Studies. Graduate Institute of Chemistry focuses on the researches in material and biological chemistry. The researches on medicine chemistry and on blood type transference are two recent trends of biochemistry.
TKU’s Graduate Institute of Civil Engineering is famous for its researches on Wind Engineering for decades. In the early time, the Department of Civil Engineering focused on the studies of land management. Recently, the influence of wind on building is recognized publicly and academically. “The researches on Wind Engineering adds one unique characteristic to Tamkang University, and is also the recent academic trend” remarks Dr. Lin Yuh-yi, chair of the Institute.
