MOE’s 2007 private universities subsidy program has granted a total of NT$ 1.5 hundred million to the Tamkang University this year. The total amount of the subsidy granted to local private universities is NT$3.3 billion.

The subsidy program is decided according to two criteria, first, an evaluation of each university’s accomplishment in school management and second, the size of the university, the number of students and teachers of the universities.

Last year, TKU was granted with NT$ 91 million in school management category, the subsidy rose to NT$ 93 million this year. However, the subsidy evaluated according to the size of the university category dropped to NT$ 56 million from the last year’s NT$ 61 million.

The committee in charged of granting the subsidy gives credit to TKU’s excellent performance in recruiting new faculties; however, the committee suggests that the university should hire more professors and provide more spaces to each students as TKU does not have enough faculties nor enough spaces for students in comparison with other local universities.

The committee also praises TKU’s effort in foreign languages teaching with building a sound Multi-language learning environment. There are also more and more courses that taught exclusively in English. The school also asked every sophomores and juniors to take at least one course that is taught in English each semester. Exchange students programs between TKU and her sister schools are another system that has been implemented to accelerate the global interaction. These efforts won TKU the first place in a survey conducted by the Cabinet-level Research, Development and Evaluation Committee to assess the English-learning environment.

Tamkang University has always adheres to the educational framework based on the ideals of globalization, information-oriented education, and future-oriented education. Following these ideals, TKU has build an in-campus internet environment and digital learning platform in the hope of achieving distance education to local and foreign universities. ( ~Shu-chun Yen )
