An Appraisal of Internationalization at Tamkang

On Sept 14, commissioners from the Control Yuan of the ROC and the Ministry of Education (MOE) came to the TKU Tamsui Campus. They came to assess Tamkang University’s policies in two specific areas: 1. TKU policy on internationalization; and 2. Measures for student recruitment to remedy the problem brought on by plummeting birth rates. The visiting delegation comprised commissioners from the Control Yuan, such as Dr. Louis R. Chao and Jeo-Chen Yin, as well as the Director General of the Department of Higher Education, Ho Jow-fei.

Encouraging Students to Learn in Groups

Two years ago, the Student Learning Support Section of the TKU Center of Learning and Teaching set up a Social Study Group program. Under the program, study groups receive subsidies on expenses associated with group meetings provided that they conform to the study group rules set out by TKU. Since then, the number of study groups at Tamkang has mushroomed, from 13 in 2009 to 44 in 2010.

Teaching and Growing Together

In 2009, numerous TKU teachers came together to form a social group known as the “Teacher Improvement and Professional Growth Club”. At its outset, the club consisted of 14 groups. A year later (in the 2010 academic year), its scale had grown to include 31 groups. Groups consist of Tamkang teachers who come together regularly to share experiences, discuss teaching methods and techniques, and brainstorm new and innovative ways of engaging students.

A Seminar on TKU Student Society Courses

On September 14, the Extracurricular Activities Guidance Section of the Office of Student Affairs held a seminar on prerequisite student society courses, which begin for freshmen this year.
