Minister of Education to Meet with Tamkang Student

On September 29, the president of TKU, Dr. Flora Chia-I Chang met with the winner of the 2011 Worldwide Competition on Microsoft Office, fourth-year Statistics student Liao Ru-hsuan. Ru-hsuan was accompanied by her research supervisors, TKU PhD candidate Chen Zhi-yang and master’s student Liu Wen-hsiu, who received an NT $100,000 cash price to assist in future training and research.

TKU Dean of General Affairs Awarded for Ongoing Contribution

In the 3rd “Taiwan Healthy City” award ceremony, TKU Dean of General Affairs and Associate Professor of the Department of Architecture, Dr. Jeng Hoang-ell, was presented with an award for “outstanding contribution”. His outstanding contribution comes primarily in the form of ongoing community service. Over the past several decades, Dr. Jeng has used his architectural expertise to help local residents increase their professional abilities and gain more opportunities for employment. He has also counseled groups from various regions around Taiwan, helped to integrate academic, government, and business interests, and injected a greater sense of community awareness into government policy.

Architecture Students Achieve Success Locally and Internationally

The other was Tsai Pei-shan, who placed second in the Chain Qui Construction 2011 Architecture Competition. The Chairman of the Department of Architecture, Dr. Lai Ih-Cheng, commented: “The pride of the TKU Department of Architecture is its students’ ability to continually gain new inspiration and ideas. They also do their very best to put these ideas into practice.”

Two New Sister Schools for Tamkang

Tamkang University recently concluded partnership agreements with two leading overseas universities: the Queensland University of Technology (QUT) and California State Polytech University, Pomona. At the same time, TKU and QUT also signed an agreement initiating dual degree programs across four academic departments: the Department of Economics, Finance, International Business, and International Economics.

Improved Statistics in Student Registration

Each academic year, a small number of freshmen who initially enrolled for study do not turn up to registration day or to their classes. This year, 96.73% of freshmen began their studies as planned according to statistics from the Office of Academic Affairs.

Cheng Tung-Wen – The New Dean of Human Resources

On the 1st October, Dr. Cheng Tung-Wen, a professor in the Department of Chemical and Materials Engineering became the new Dean of Human Resources. Dr. Cheng, who once served as the Chairman of the department, expressed: “My greatest challenge will be my ability to communicate and coordinate issues. I hope, however, that during the process I will learn and grow.”

Incentives for Gaining Better Grades

In the past, the majority of awards issued by TKU went to students with outstanding grades, noteworthy athletic achievements, or standout performances in any of Tamkang’s various competitions. Little emphasis, however, was placed on encouraging students to gain improved grades.
