The 2001-2002 School Year 2nd Phase Conference to Update Knowledge and Capacity of Advisors/Counselo

The 2001~ 2002 School Year 2nd Phase Conference to Update Knowledge and Skills of TKU Advisors/Counselors was held last Wednesday (April 17) at the International Conference Room, Ching Sheng Memorial Hall. In addressing the conference, Pres. Chang Horng-jinh told the conferees that the best recipe for student counseling is to know the mentality of students before counseling them.

Pres. Chang identified in point blank fashion the most acute problem facing teenagers today to be the uprising of the numerous so-called network cafes. Because they may be fascinated by logging on the website day in and day out, they may end up being a weirdo---not seeing friends, not dating any friends of the opposite sex, their handwriting quickly deteriorating, and their speech capacity also impaired as a result of little practice. Finally, they will become the typical e-generation victims of the “cutting-edge” technology.

These poor kids are what every advisor of TKU is supposed to save or salvage, as the case may be.

Then Pres. Chang handed out the citations to the role model advisors of the year 2001 and later, they all listened to a speech given by Prof. Hou Tsong-wen, Dean, Office of Academic Affairs, National Taipei University. His topic “The Development of the Behavior Pattern and Value System among College Students” deals with the structuring of a safe and healthy environment for college students. In his address, Prof. Hou also touched upon the acute existing problems of the e-generation youth.
