2025 Academic Year Handover Ceremony: President Keh Urges Continued Efforts to Strengthen Recruitment

Tamkang University held the “2025 Academic Year Appointment and Handover Ceremony for Administrative Heads” on August 4, with over one hundred participants, including three vice presidents, first-level administrative heads, faculty members, and staff. Appointments were announced for five units, with handovers for five first-level administrative heads and twelve second-level administrative heads. The Director of the Center for Sustainable Development and Social Innovation was renamed the Chief Sustainability Officer, with Ruey-Shiang Shaw assuming the role.

As part of the university’s 75th anniversary celebrations, the Tamkang Clement and Carrie Chair Lecture features Nobel Laureates — Prof. Gerardus ’t Hooft and Prof. Arthur B. McDonald, recipients of the Nobel Prize in Physics, and Prof. Ryoji Noyori, recipient of the Nobel Prize in Chemistry — to deliver lectures on campus.

In celebration of its 75th anniversary, various units have been actively organizing commemorative events. Among them, the “Tamkang Clement and Carrie Chang Chair Lecture Series,” endowed through the generous donation of the University’s founder and his spouse, will welcome three Nobel Prize laureates to the Tamsui campus to deliver world-class lectures.

In an era where AI technology is rapidly reshaping the world, the College of Artificial Innovative Intelligence (AII), established in 2020, has leveraged hands-on, practice-oriented courses, world-class resources, and a comprehensive training framework to help students earn more than 1,800 international certifications. Nearly 70% of these students come from non-ICT-related departments, reflecting Tamkang University’s strong cross-disciplinary engagement in AI learning. Among these achievements, over 780 NVIDIA certifications have been awarded, placing Tamkang at the forefront of universities across Taiwan.

The World University Rankings for Innovation (WURI) released its 2025 rankings on July 10, recognizing Tamkang University with two projects ranked among the Top 100 globally in their respective categories: the Department of Economics’ “Eco & Edu” (經探號) overseas exploration initiative, and the university’s Total Quality Management (TQM) program. The projects earned 18th and 35th places, respectively.

Though the campus may seem quiet during the summer, Tamkang University is amid its annual wave of international mobility. More than 700 students have traveled abroad throughout the season to secure new learning opportunities.

Language Empowered by AI: Foreign Language Departments Showcase Impressive Course Achievements

The Department of Japanese's “Haruki Murakami and Modern Literature” course and the Department of Spanish's “Spanish for Tourism” course, both under the College of Foreign Languages and Literatures, coincidentally held their project presentations on June 12, showcasing students' use of AI tools in creating anime clips and videos. Both instructors praised the students' interdisciplinary performances. Distinguished Professor Chih-Yung Chang from the Department of Computer Science and Information Engineering, who served as a judge, told the students, “Language majors, when combined with AI, will be empowered like a tiger with wings.”

Independent Learning Courses Flourish in First Year, Empowering Students to Pitch Creative Proposals
The implementation of independent learning courses is highly diverse, allowing students to determine their own methods of learning and practice based on their personal interests.

“We want students to decide what to learn and how to learn — that is the core spirit of independent learning,” explained Shun-Jie Ji, Director of the Center for General Education and Core Curriculum. He noted that, in line with the independent learning model promoted by Taiwan’s Curriculum Guidelines of 12 Year Basic Education, Tamkang University introduced the “TKU Guidelines for the Implementation of Student Independent Learning Courses” in the 2024–2025 academic year. These guidelines encourage students to take initiative in proposing learning topics and to deepen their learning experience through hands-on practice. The program has been steadily expanding, growing from 6 courses in the first semester to 11 courses in the second semester. Ji expressed hopes that more students will make good use of these resources, boldly submit proposals, actively participate, and enhance their knowledge, skills, and interdisciplinary learning outcomes.

To help new club leaders and officers quickly gain essential skills for effective student organization management, Tamkang University’s Extracurricular Activities Guidance Section held the “2025 Tanhai Same Boat” program from June 23 to 27 on the Tamsui Campus, attracting nearly 170 student participants. The 5-day event combined training courses, ceremonial activities, reflective sessions, and networking opportunities to strengthen students’ leadership abilities, organizational management skills, and their understanding and application of AI and sustainability concepts.

International Student Guidance Section of the International and Cross-Strait Affairs Office organized the 2025 Tamkang University Leadership Camp for International Student Club Officers, aimed at cultivating AI-driven thinking and leadership skills to strengthen their ability to manage student organizations in the future.

The International Student Guidance Section of the Office of International and Cross-Strait Affairs hosted the “2025 Tamkang University International Student Leadership Camp” on June 19 and 20, held at both the Hsu Shou-Chlien International Conference Center and the Fullon Hotel Tamsui. Themed “AI Thinking × Leadership: Shaping the Leaders of Tomorrow,” the camp combined intensive courses with hands-on training to strengthen students’ planning, decision-making, and teamwork skills, laying a solid foundation for future student organization management. This year, 39 officers from 6 international student associations participated, including the Japanese Student Association, Indonesian Student Association, Malaysian Student Association, Lion Dance Club, International Student Friendship Club, and the International Ambassador Team.

On the morning of July 9 at 9:00 a.m., Dr. Marivic L. Daguio, Principal of Makati Hope Christian School in the Philippines, along with Academic Affairs Director Ms. Kristin M. Basco and Administrative Officer Mr. Dino Paolo Cortes, visited Tamkang University. The delegation was welcomed by the Office of International and Cross-Strait Affairs and attended a signing ceremony at Hsu Shou-Chlien International Conference Center, where President Huan-Chao Keh and Dr. Daguio represented the two institutions in signing a strategic alliance agreement. The ceremony was also attended by Vice President for International Affairs Prof. Hsiao-Chuan Chen, Dean of the College of Business and Management Prof. Li-Ren Yang, Dean of International Affairs Prof. Chien-Mu Yeh, and the Office Secretary and Exchange Section Chief Ms. Hsinyin AC Chu. The visit concluded with a guided tour of the University History Gallery and the Chueh Sheng Memorial Library, where guests learned about Tamkang’s institutional development and library resources.

SFSU's Dr. Scott Seigal Lectures at Tamkang, Enhancing Faculty and Student Exchange
The Department of Diplomacy and International Relations in the College of International Affairs invited Dr. Scott Seigal, Associate Professor of International Relations at San Francisco State University, to teach the summer course “East Asia’s Role in the Global Economic System,” with the course opening ceremony held on June 30.

To further strengthen collaboration between San Francisco State University (SFSU) and Tamkang University, the Office of International and Cross-Strait Affairs and the College of International Affairs jointly hosted the “San Francisco State University Faculty-Led Program” from July 1 to 22. As part of the initiative, the Department of Diplomacy and International Relations invited Dr. Scott Seigal, Associate Professor of International Relations at SFSU, to serve as a visiting faculty member and teach the summer course “East Asia’s Role in the Global Economic System.” The program brought together 9 SFSU students and 15 Tamkang students, creating a platform for academic and cultural exchange.
