TKU ROBOTS WON 9 INDIVIDUAL AND GROUP CHAMPIONSHIPS: DEPT. OF ELECTRICAL ENGINEERING’S INHERITANCE OF TEAMWORK SPIRIT IS HIGHLY RECOGNIZED
TKU’s FIRA humanoid robots once again won high honor, with nine individual and one group championships, and two second places, in the “2007 Taiwan Intelligent Robot Practice Competition” held on October 19 and 20 in Southern Taiwan University. Some twenty local universities, including Cheng Kung University, Southern Taiwan University, Chang-Gung University, gathered in Tainan for the yearly competition. TKU team consists of 37 members, including Ph.D, master graduate, and undergraduate students, and is led by Dr. Wong Ching-chang, chair of Dept. of Electrical Engineering. The items of TKU’s champions include group champion and six first places in FIRA humanoid robot comprehensive game, one FIRA middle-sized robot football game, RoboCup and ro-robot, RoboCup middle-sized robot football. Besides, TKU team won second places in FIRA 5-5 Simulation, and Olympic WRO Robot game.

Worldwide alumni went back to school! Responding to the invitation of President Flora Chia-I Chang, the first convention of the 6th National Alumni Association was held in I-lan this year, with a two-day (10/28, 10/29) trip. In the convention, the Alumni Association elected the new chairperson, secretaries, secretary generals, and supervisors, and celebrated the school’s 57 year-old birthday in advance. The annual alumni’s welcoming day will be hold on Nov. 3, with a tea party, hosted by President Flora Chia-I Chang in Student Activity Center, Tamusi campus. The alumni in different fields and places are welcome to join in the yearly gathering.

COLLEGE OF INTERNATIONAL STUDIES HELD FORUM ON YELTSIN
College of International Studies and Graduate Institute of Slavic Studies co-held a Tamkang Forum, “General Remarks on the Achievements in Yeltsin's Official Career,” at Room SG 317, Gymnasium, on Oct. 31. Vice President of International Affairs, Dr. Wan-chin Tai, hosted the forum and invited former representative of Belorussia, Pei- Lung Tuan, Shu- I Chiang, and Fu- Cheng Wu, deputy director of Office of International Affairs in Taiwan Institute of Economic Research to the forum. There will be nine experts and scholars to present papers.

Department of Chinese will host “Conference on Image and Comics” at Ching-Sheng International Conference Hall on Friday (November 2). Tamsui town Mayor Yeh-wei Tsai, President Flora Chia-I Chang, Dean of College of Liberal Arts, Dr. Ya-ly Chao, and Chair of Department of Chinese, Dr. Cheng-tsong Tsui will attend the inauguration. Besides, Dr. Te-Lin Hung, Deputy Director of Research Centre of Comic Artist in National Chiao Tung University, cartoonists Sung-Shan Hsu, Hsiang-Lin Tang, concept designer of Gamania, Te-Hao Wang, general manager of OMQ ZMedia Ltd, Tse Wang, president of Taipei Comic Artist Labor Union, Hung-Chi Chu, president of Chinese Cartoonist Society, Shun-Ping Wang will be invited to join the conference.

HAWAII PACIFIC UNIVERSITY VISITED TKU AND DISCUSSED ON DUAL DEGREES
Mr. Harry Byerly, Vice President of Hawaii Pacific University, one of TKU’s sister universities, Mr. Erick Kish, Director of Hawaii Pacific Taiwan Admissions Center, and Ms. Chieh-Yi Kuo, a senior consultant visited TKU on Oct. 23rd ( last Tuesday).The briefing was hosted by Dr. Tai Wan-chin, Vice President of International Affairs. Accompanied participants included Dr. Yang Ming-yu, Chair of Department of Mass Communication, Dr. Wang Ying-hong, chair of Department of Computer Science and Information Engineering, Dr. Lou Kuo-ren, Chair of Graduate Institute of Management Sciences and Dr. Tsai Jeng-yan, chair of Department of Software Engineering, and Chen Hwei-mei, Director of Office of International Exchanges and International Education. In the meeting, representatives form both schools discussed academic cooperation between two universities and brought up proposals for dual degrees policy, including “1+1 system,” “3+1+1 system.”
