THOUSAND ALUMNI CAME TO CELEBRATE TKU’S BIRTHDAY HAPPILY
At the Anniversary Celebration, President Flora C.I. Chang is handing the certificate of the Director (Elected) of the TKU North America Alumni Association to the Golden Eagle Award winner Jun-yu Chen.

TKU’s 59th Anniversary Ceremony took place at the Student Activity Center on Saturday Nov. 7. Except President Flora C.I. Chang and TKU Founder Clement C.P. Chang, former Presidents Yea-hong Chen and Yun-shan Lin, the World TKU Alumni Association Director General Hsiang-shu Duan, the former R.O.C. TKU Alumni Association Director General Ching-nan Chen and the Director General Elected Shen Luo also participated. Golden Eagle Award winners Wen-xong Lin, Shu-lun Kuo and Jun-yu Chen personally came to receive their awards at the Anniversary Ceremony. The opening ceremony began with the enthusiastic singing of the TKU Song by all participants, and the scene was warm and happy.

ALTERA DONATED MULTI-MILLION EQUIPMENT TO TKU

American company Altera donated FPGA hardware, development software and IP equipment and technology to TKU, and they are worth more than NT$150 million. The American company would set up an EDA/SOPC joint lab to cultivate outstanding system designing talents together with TKU’s Department of Electrical Engineering. The agreement signing ceremony took place at E680 on Nov. 11 at 10:00 am. President Flora C.I. Chang, Altera General Manager (Taiwan Area) Ying-ren Chen and TERASIC Technologies General Manager Hsian-en Peng participated in the agreement signing ceremony.

FU KUO-HUANG INSPECTED DISATER AREA FOR RECONSTRUCTION

Invited by the Council of Indigenous Peoples, Water Resources and Environmental Engineering Associate Professor Fu-kuo Huang participated in the safety appraisals of the Typhoon Morakot disaster. He went to Daren Township and Dawu Township in Taitung County to inspect the seriousness of the disaster, and he cooperated with the Morakot Post-Disaster Reconstruction Council, Executive Yuan, to take part in the meeting to explain the destructive situation and offer the indigenous peoples their professional analyses that would be evidence for migration or reconstruction.

JILIN UNIVERSITY DELEGATION VISITED TKU

Led by University Affairs Committee Chair De-wen Chen, a delegation of 6 from Jilin University visited TKU on Nov. 10. President Flora C.I. Chang, International Affairs Vice President Wan-chin Tai and the Graduate Institute of China Studies Chair Wu-ueh Chang jointly received the delegation and had a bulletin-briefing at the Ching-sheng International Conference Hall. They discussed issues related to curricula for exchange students and the numbers of future exchange students.

JAPANESE CALLIGRAPHERS AND PAINTERS OBSERVED TKU’S CALLIGRAPHY TEACHING

On Nov. 6 at 3:00 pm, Carrie Chang Fine Arts Center Deputy Director Ben-hang Chang gave a lecture on calligraphy, which attracted more than 100 members of Japan Calligraphy Association, including renowned calligraphers and painters. Ben-hang Chang delivered the lecture completely in fluent Japanese. He introduced calligraphy teaching at TKU through the systems of e-pen calligraphy, painting and the Ching writing. All participants were amazingly fascinated by the lecture and all kept nodding with happy smiles.

TKU PLANS TO BUILD E-CURRICULUM MAP SYSTEM

To help students obtain basic academic abilities to meet serious employment challenges after graduation, the Office of Academic Affairs plans to combine all academic, general education, and inter-disciplinary curricula by all departments, centers and institutes to develop a TKU Overall Curricula Map Information System that will hopefully be completed by the end of this academic year. The Dean of Academic Affairs Huan-chao Keh stated that when the e-System is completed, students can estimate their academic abilities according to the results of their studies through it. Through the e-System, they can also prepare to accumulate their competitiveness for their future planning. In accordance with the outstanding teaching plan, striving for the student basic capability target, the TKU General Education Committee set up the Overall Student Basic Capability Target in 2008. According to their capacities, all departments and institutes had set up their Basic Capability Targets in 2007. To guarantee the qualities of teaching and learning, after having carefully examined all those Capability Targets, the relationships between curriculum designs and teaching contents, methodologies and evaluations, the Office of Academic Affairs has planned to establish a “Basic Capability Radar Map System,” an examining system with all courses installed. Students can select their courses according to their personal and career planning. If they key in all their selected courses, they can know the accumulated basic capability that is quantified and shown with a radar map according to which they can judge if that will meet their expectations and where the successful ratio is for them.

PEI-YUAN WU’S COLORED PAINTING CAPTURED THE FIRST PRIZE
Architecture junior Pei-yuan Wu won the 1st prize for the TKU students’ group in the painting competition themed “Sailing on the Vast Tamkang: The Beauty of Scenery and Ships.” He is happily posing for the photo with his winning work.

More than 100 paintings competed in the painting competition themed “Sailing on the Vast Tamkang: The Beauty of Scenery and Ships” by TKU’s Carrie Chang Fine Arts Center on Nov 7, the very day of TKU’s 59th Anniversary. TKU Architecture junior Pei-yuan Wu won the first prize in the TKU student group while Tamsui resident Rui-zheng Chen got the first prize in the community group. Both got an award certificate with NT$5,000.

TKU ORCHID SHOW WAS UNIQUELY SPLENDID
The Office of General Affairs held “Black Swan Magic Slipper Orchid Show.” This is the Slipper Orchid that has won the total championship and caught most visitors’ attention.

The traditional TKU Orchid Show was on at the Black Swan Exhibition Hall from Nov. 7 to 10. Patterning international orchid exhibition style, on behalf of TKU Founder Clement C.P. Chang, the Orchid Show issued award medals to winning orchids. On the spot, many kinds of orchids were striving to compete with one another with their amazing beauties. The most attractive ones were the Slipper Orchid that won the TKU Board Chair’s Award and the Kidney Drug Orchid that won the President’s Award. All visitors spontaneously cried out, “How beautiful!”

LANYANG CAMPUS GARDEN PARTY WAS LIVELY

Lanyang Campus held a series of anniversary activities on Nov. 7. Except the performances by the Rock and Roll Club and other 3 student clubs at the open square in front of the male dormitory building Chien-hsuan First Hall, there was the best loved garden party that had baked delicious hot sticky cakes, healthy green grass tea, famous Yilan green onion oily pan cakes, etc. Students were also selling their self-made Chinese fans and other useful articles. More than 20 stalls were striving to attract visitors to buy their foods and articles, and the scene was lively hustle and bustle. The coordinator of the TKU’s 59th anniversary celebration Tourism sophomore Jian-hao Lian said that for the TKU anniversary, all of them worked very hard. Besides, the weather was quite cooperating and that enabled the garden party to end perfectly. Tourism sophomore Hui-qun Li said, “Many stalls were from Jiaosi Township and they offered the most well-known local delicacies and snacks. We had them all without traveling down the mountain.”
