Community Learning: A Tale of Sino-French War in Taiwan

On the 17th of October, students from TKU’s Departments of Insurance and Statistics undertook community learning by serving as volunteers at the Tamsui International Environmental Arts Festival. Statistics student, Wang Zhen-yang, said that “thanks to TKU’s community service program, I’ve had the opportunity to be a part of this Arts Festival, and have a really rewarding experience”. Insurance student, Liu Ling-jie, on the other hand, was impressed by the priority seating for senior citizens arranged by the Tamsui City Hall.

A “Clubly” 60th Anniversary Celebration

Diamond Jubilee fever has spread to I-lan, north central Taiwan, where TKU’s Lanyang Campus is scheduled to hold a dazzling array of celebratory activities. The activities will be part of a vast school fair, which will feature sports competitions, tree planting events, a rare light exhibition, and live entertainment.

Japanese Interns Arrive at TKU

On the 17th of October, a group of intern Japanese teachers from Japan arrived at TKU as part of an intern exchange program. The interns, nine in total, came from Japan’s Kyoto Tachibana University, one of TKU’s Japanese sister schools. Apart from sitting in on a variety of Japanese language classes, the interns also had the chance to gain real life teaching experience, by teaching several first and second year Japanese language classes. The interns, each of whom hopes to become a Japanese teacher after graduating, gained much from the practical experience.

The Department of English Turns Sixty

Tamkang University began as an English College. The English College later evolved into what is now known as the TKU Department of English. Therefore, Tamkang’s 60th anniversary is also the English Department’s 60th anniversary. To celebrate, the Department of English will be holding a day of fun and entertainment, a warm up for the TKU Diamond Jubilee.

The Lantern Lane Makeover – Body Painting and Lanterns

5-4-3-2-1! One light, then another, and another begin to illuminate, and their silky pink light shades flap and flutter in the warm evening breeze. At 6pm on the 18th of Oct, Lantern Lane was bathed in a soft purple glow. The President of TKU, Dr. Flora Chia-I Chang, who attended the colorful lighting ceremony, explained that Lantern Lane is a pathway steeped in Tamkang History. The Chinese-palace style classrooms that flank Lantern Lane were once the starting point for construction of permanent classrooms at the Tamsui Campus. It is thus fitting that the lighting ceremony – a symbolic event leading up to the TKU Diamond Jubilee – be held at Lantern Lane.

A Novel Display of Alumni Artwork and Literature

During November, the TKU Library will be hosting a series of activities that will showcase artwork and books produced and published by TKU alumni. With the catchy title “It Was You All Along”, the event will consist of 6 separate activities, including an alumni book display, an artwork exhibit, film screenings, and trivia quizzes, among others.

Lantern Lane Draped in Silk

Since the 18th of October, the old-style light posts that line Lantern Lane have been clothed in flowing pink silk. Tables and benches have been installed around the foot of the posts, inviting students and teachers to sit and relax, to chat and laugh, and to reflect on Tamkang’s 60-year-old heritage.
