A Communication Takes Place Between the Trees and the People at the Sunny Meadows

【Reported by Ying-tian Fan, Yi-feng Lu, Tamkang Times】The teacher student exchange took place to appreciate the trees on June 4th and was filled with musical performances and stories of all kinds. In addition to entertainment it was an opportunity for students and teachers to become familiar with the old beautiful trees on campus and have a deeper appreciation for the environment. In attendance was President Flora Chia-I Chang, Vice President of Academic Affairs, Gwo-hsing Lu, Vice President of International Affairs, Wan-chin Tai, along with many administrators and professors. The event was hosted by Dean of Student Affairs, Chih-en Ko, who continually made the audience laugh and applaud.

UNESCO Workshop Takes Place With 80 Attendees

【Reported by Bo-jun Zhuang, Tamkang Times】Last May from the 21st to the 24th the Graduate Institute of Future Studies headed to Laoag City in the Philippines to attend the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) workshop themed, “Sustaining a City of Vitality with a Bright Future.” Five Tamkang University representatives attended the forum including Dean of the Graduate Institute of Future Studies, Jian-bang Deng, Associate Professor Kuo-hua Chen, Assistant Professor Shun-jie Ji, Assistant Professor Mei-mei Song, and Research Specialist Sohail Inayatullah.

【Reported by Yu-xuan Zhou, Tamkang Times】On June 4th the College of International Research held a forum regarding, “The relationship between America, China and Japan.” The event was hosted by Vice President of International Affairs, Wan-chin Tai, who invited Director of the Asian Studies Center at American University Washington D.C., Quan-sheng Zhao, and five professors from the College of International Research to participate in the forum. Wan-chin Tai expressed, “Having experts of international relations attend this forum is rare and invaluable. I hope that during this exchange we can mutually learn and grow.”

TKU Becomes Sister University with Chung-ang University

【Reported by Yi-wan Lu, Tamkang Times】Korea’s Chung-ang University sent three representatives to visit Tamkang University on June 3rd. Among the visitors was Chung-ang University President, Yong-goo Lee, who met with President Flora Chia-I Chang to sign an agreement to officially establish an academic exchange. Back in March when President Chang attended the academic forum in Korea, she met with Chung-ang University President and agreed to form a university partnership. Currently Tamkang University has 167 sister universities, 9 of which are in Korea.

The Alumni Summit Meets in Gaoxiong

【Reported by Min-xu Liu, Tamkang Times】Tamkang University has collaborated with the Shuai-lai Chen Foundation to hold the 2014 Tamkang University Alumni Summit at the Ching-fu ShipBuilding on May 30th. In attendance were over 50 alumni that partook in the exploration of the “Future Development Strategy.” The purpose of the summit was to discuss the strategies of student cultivation in the near future.” For the event they invited speaker Xiang-ping Ma from the Ministry of Education, President of Dong Hwa University, Maw-Kuen Wu, and President of Jianguo High School, Wei-hen Chen to share ideas and experience.

Tamkang University’s International Student Dragon Boat Competition

For the first time Tamkang University had an international student team compete in the dragon boat competition. On May 31st at Aodi Harbor located in New Taipei City’s Gongliao District, the Dragon Boat Festival boat race took place, letting both observers and participants experience a crucial piece of Taiwan’s heritage and tradition. Dean of the Office of International and Cross-Strait Affairs, Pei-wha Chilee, expressed, “Throughout the years we’ve had many overseas exchange students come and watch this exciting event. I’m very glad that this year they were able to do more than just observe. I think such an involving experience will be a lifetime memory and it will also have a positive effect on Taiwan.”
