This new semester witness some of foreign newcomers in our campus. According to the statistics of Office of Academic Affairs, 19 foreign students apply for studying in Tamkang University (TKU). Most foreign students are from Southeast Asia countries, especially Japan and Korea. Unusually, this years three are students from Poland, Hungary, and even Costa Rica.

Lee Hue Kyung, Korean, who applied for Master’s Program of Graduate Institute of China Studies this year, speaks very fluent Chinese. She grew up in the southern part of Korea and graduated from Dept. of French, Kemyung University, Korea. What triggered her interest to learn Chinese is her admiration of the Hong Kong entertainers Andy Law and Chow Yun-fat, who arose a “Chinese Fashion” in Korea when she was a sophomore. Following her graduation in 1997, She came to China immediately to learn Chinese at the language center in Tian Jin University, but withdrew after six months. Lee indicated that the learning environment in China was not very good. For instance, she had to find a better Korean restaurant to see a newspaper. “However, I still want to learn Chinese”, she said, so she decided to study in TKU. She said that she is very interested in China affairs after learning Chinese, and therefore, she chose to study in Graduate Institute of China Studies. Comparing Taiwan’s learning environment with Mainland China’s, she said, “People have more freedom in Taiwan than in Mainland, and I can make a lot of friends here. Besides, I think Tamkang University can offer very good learning atmosphere because of its tranquil environment.”

Another foreign student, Anna Rudakowska, is from a remote country. She graduated from University of Warsaw in Poland and applied for the Ph. D. Program of Graduate Institute of European Studies. She indicated that she pursued her education in many different countries: she attended high school in U.S., college and graduate school in Poland.
