Yu Zi-chen, Chiu Wen-sheng and Chen Jun-ming, all freshmen from the Department of History, travelled to Canada on July 30 as representatives of Taiwan to attend the Second World Championships for the Visually Impaired, 2003. They were guests of honor at a reception given by President Chen Shui-bian on October 9.
Both Yu and Chiu are completely visually impaired whereas Chen has very limited visual capability. They were already classmates at elementary school and attended the same junior high school afterwards. In their 9th grade, their shared interest, goalball, led them to join the same club on campus, and eventually they all played for the Taiwan National Goalball Team.
After entering Tamkang, they started to play for the TKU baseball team for the blind, which requires intensive practice on weekends. Nonetheless, they still play goalball whenever they can. Their competitive spirit is best expressed by Chiu: “We always do our very best in every competition.”
