Last Saturday, Chair of the Preparatory Office of Lanyang Campus, Founder Clement C. P. Chang, led the office members to supervise and survey the progress of construction and listened to the briefing on the campus’ general future development. That day the Secretary General of Ilan County Government Yuan-fa Chen also led several officials to the Construction Office at Linmei Mountain; he, together with Supervisor of Chiao-hsi Village Cheng-sheng Lin and Chair of the Village Council Tsong-fan Chen, spoke to support Tamkang’s construction at Ilan.
At 2 p.m. that day, about 20 members of the Course Committee (from the General Development Group, the Preparatory Office of Lanyang Campus) arrived at the construction site, and followed Founder Chang to supervise the progress of miscellaneous constructions. Chair of TKU’s office at Chiao-hsi Chen-yuan Tseng indicated that the miscellaneous constructions were planned to be finished by the end of December, and the permit for water and earth maintenance would be applied for according to the progress of construction by the middle of this month and miscellaneous permits by the beginning of December. Founder Chang wished that teachers could visit the new campus to receive inspiration of new stimuli. The primary mapping out of the academic units will be completed by the middle of this month.
During the briefing, Founder Chang indicated, “The 21st century belongs to the development of Ilan. Tamkang has achieved much at Tamsui; we will continue with our fifty-years of experience to administrate education in Ilan. Education is a century-long career. We have to do the best. The pressure of time is no excuse for doing poorly.” President Horng-jinh Chang said, “World-famous universities must have their uniqueness. We are planning a new academic system to connect Cambridge and Harvard, through which graduates can directly continue their M. A. studies. And this will definitely create uniqueness and glory. We will also play a more active role in local affairs; students will attend classes at Chiaohsi golf field, take part in Tong-Shan rowing contest, and even compete against world-famous universities in international rowing contests. We will do our best to create a utopia at Ilan.”
The Secretary General of Ilan County Government Yuan-fa Chen, in place of Mayor Liu, led the officials of the Construction, Agriculture, Environmental Protection, and Water Maintenance Bureaus to listen attentively to the briefing. He stressed that it was Mayor Liu’s ideal to develop a high-tech university town at Ilan and Tamkang was part of the development project; the county government will assist Tamkang and fulfill Mayor Liu’s ideal. He wittily responded to President Chang’s speech: “With Ilan’s beautiful mountains and rivers, it is hard for Tamkang to be ordinary. Tamkang’s campus is surely to be another sightseeing spot in Ilan.”
