When passing by Sao-mo Memorial Natatorium Complex, one must be surprised by the new outdoor abstract sculpture named “Global Village,” a posthumous artwork by master Ying-feng Yang. Both TKU founder Dr. Clement C. P. Chang and president Horng-jinh Chang attended the ceremony for revealing this statue on Nov. 9.
This new sculpture is part of the internationally acclaimed master Yang’s 1991 series works—“Cosmos.” Made of stainless steel, this work presents an image of the infinite universe in which are millions of planets including the earth. It brings the realization that we are only part of the vast universe and thereby a macroscopic attitude to the world. Such a spirit underlies TKU’s efforts for globalization. The artwork is composed of seven uneven pieces of steel, and every piece of steel has a bright surface just like an exquisite Sung dynasty porcelain piece; also, its pure and simple lines inscribe in this abstract sculpture a harmonious image of the universe.
Bing-huang Chang, vice-director of Carrie Chang Fine Arts Center, remarks that the steel material of this artwork not only reflects the beautiful Tamsui sunset, but it also echoes the modern architecture of the natatorium. Master Yang’s Cosmos series create a dialogue between the modern and the traditional and promote a harmonious universe. Such an idea agrees with the spirit of TKU. Master Yang passed away several years ago, and only a few works were created for public spaces. The display of this sculpture at TKU is thus rare and valuable.
