Professor Lin Meng-shan of the Chemistry Department recently received the NT$300,000 National Science Council Technology Transfer Award. The fifteen researchers winning the second Technology Transfer Award come from various academic institutions, only two of which, Tamkang and Feng Chia, are private universities.

The award is set up by the Ministry of Education to encourage the research and patenting of methods and techniques, which can be transferred to industry. The first Technology Transfer Award went to fifteen researchers, all from the national universities. The second Technology Transfer Award, however, sees two of the fifteen recipients come from private universities. Professor Lin is the first at Tamkang University to receive this award. The University encourages teachers to patent their research results and apply for the National Science Council award. The award will be of practical help to long-term research.

Professor Lin’s "Method and Chemical Sensor for Determining Concentrations of Hydrogen Peroxide and Its Precursor in a Liquid" has been patented in both the ROC and the USA. The technique has been successfully transferred to Feng-yu Biotechnology, with a royalty of NT$910,000. This transfer was further awarded NT$300,000 by the National Science Council.

Professor Lin, who has received NSC research grants for many years, explains that the many-worded title of the patent refers to a technique related to blood testing, with the possibility of applications in industrial measurement. His research usually starts from a single “point” out of which many research directions develop. The award-winning biotechnology related research is one of them.

Preparing for three more patent applications in the USA and this country, Professor Lin remarks that the application procedure for this technology transfer award is complicated and involves a lot of paperwork; the research result has to be patented first and then supported by industry before one can submit the application to the NSC. He thanks the staff in the Office of Research and Development for their tremendous help with the complicated administrative procedures.
