HARMONICA CLUB WINS THIRD PLACE IN STUDENT MUSIC CONTEST

The Harmonica Student Club of TKU won the third place among the universities in the Northern Taiwan in a music event, “National Student Music Contest”, organized by the Ministry of Education, sometime ago. In this category, there were 10 teams altogether with National Taiwan Normal University winning the first place, followed by National Taiwan University (NTU).

The chair of the club, Lai Jung-yu, a sophomore at the Department of Mechanical and Electro-mechanical Engineering , expressed his joy in winning the third place as they only won the fifth place last year—an improvement, he believes, resulted from the addition of a drummer, who was “on loan” from the Wind Instrument Club this year. This year, they had to play two songs, one being the required, the other being their own choice. The first one was easy, but the second one happened to be the same as that one chosen by a strong rival, NTU. Even though they had expected a possibility of having the same choice as other contestants, they did not expect that the competition would come from NTU, a contest favorite. Despite this intense pressure, they managed to put forward a decent performance. In the end, the comments from the judges revealed that TKU won due to its outstanding performance in the required tune and suggested the Club to include additional instruments in the future as well as working on balancing the distribution of various tones.

All members had worked hard for this contest. They even had started half an year earlier prior to the event. As the event drew nearer, they had put in even 5 hours per day in order to come up with a meticulous performance. Such dedication has paid off, according to Liao Ann-chun, one of the members, who said that everyone felt relieved and happy with their result. (Ying-hsueh Hu)
