2005 University Games held between April 20th and May 3rd at Chung Chen University in Chia-yi closed successfully with TKU winning several prominent medals in swimming, billiards, Taekwondo and Track & Field events. The results stand at 6 golds, 8 silvers and 4 bronzes, surpassing the 6 golds, 4 silvers and 8 bronzes of last year.
All the gold medals come from swimming and billiards events. In swimming, Hsieh Hsin-ying, a first year student at the Department of Economics won two for 50 and 100 meters Breast Stroke, with the other two coming from the team mixed relays in 200 and 400 meters, both breaking the games records. In billiards, the remaining two gold medals were awarded to both TKU men and women teams.
The two silver medals and one bronze come from the Taekwondo team. Lai Wen-bing won a sliver in the Middle Weight category and Wu Chung-xuan a bronze in the Light Middle Weight Category. Lai put down his good performance to a tough physical training regime that includes the infamous Ke-Nan Po. Wu agreed and added that staying calm during competition helped tremendously, too.
Men’s tennis team consisting of 8 dynamic players also won a sliver for Tamkang in a fierce competition that involved 57 teams! They beat strong rivals such as National Yilan University, Da-Yeh University, Chung Shan Medical University and National Chung Hsin University all the way up to the championship, when they met the tough opponent, the National Taiwan University. One more silver comes from Lin Mai-jun in Track & Field, who won the second place in high jumping. (~ Ying-hsueh Hu )
