FIRST LESSON FOR THE FRESHMEN: CONQUERING KE-NAN HILL

The 2006 school year orientation for graduates, undergraduate freshmen took place at Shao-mo Memorial Gymnasium last Thursday and Friday. Before the ceremony, TKU President Chang C. I. led the students to climb up Ke-nan Hill, to be blessed by the “Simplicity, Truthfulness, Firmness, and Perseverance” school tradition. “What a beautiful campus! It is worthy of my first choice,” some students remarked after the sweating stepping up to the hill.

In the orientation address, President Chang emphasized that “Future Studies” is a necessary credit, which is designed to help students to form prospective vision for their future. And therefore, the well-facilitated internet network in the campuses is not just for MSN, but for adsorbing updated information to prepare oneself as a world citizen—to know the future, adopt to the future, and to create the future.

Dean of Office of General Affairs remarked, “The campuses of Tamkang University, compared with some other universities, are small but beautiful, with various natural scenes in and around the campuses.” He recommended the freshmen to make good use of the scholarships and chances of part-time paid services. For those who encounter financial difficulties, there are many channels for help, indicated in the student handbook.

In the orientation, there were freshmen of the Lanyang campus, who traveled from I-Ian at 4 a.m. Wang Chih-hao, freshman of Department of Tourism and Hospitality Management, remarks that “Though Lanyang Campus is a brand new campus, and the teaching system is different from that in Tamsui Campus in many ways, I regard it as a challenge.” (~ Chen Chi-szu )
