WORKSHOPS TO HELP STUDENTS PROMOTE COMPETITIVENESS FOR FUTURE WORK

In order to promote students’ competitiveness for their future work, Career Planning and Placement Section and Dept. of Public Administration co-hold a series of activities. In this month, three workshops were held, which attracted more than 200 students to attend. The last one, ended on Dec. 17, focused on evaluating students’ employability. So far there are 585 students finishing the questionnaire; among them 380 students have taken the results back.

The evaluation questionnaire was designed by Dr. Huang Yi-feng, Chair, Dept. of Public Administration, and its result was analyzed by Dr. Hung Ying-chen, Chair, Dept. of Business Administration. Dr. Huang pointed out that the only way to get employed in a competitive work environment is to cultivate one’s own ability. Students should plan their career in advance, standing from the employers’ point of view to ponder on what kinds of employees they will need, and then better their abilities step by step.

Many students inquired what the abilities that employers value are, and how to prepare themselves for the future work. Responding to these questions, Dr. Hung indicated that apart from cultivating the planning and learning ability, students should also have good attitude. He encouraged students to practice their planning skills as well as to cultivate the positive and active attitude to face the challenge through joining the school clubs and department associations. As for the learning ability, Dr. Hung said, “To learn is to change. Changing is the only way to stimulate learning.” He urged that everyone should practice changing oneself rather than refuse it.

Yu Chang-hao, a senior of Dept. of Computer Science and Information Engineering, indicated that through the evaluation questionnaire, he found that he has better performance in the aspects of planning and team cooperation, while he has weaker stability and ability to endure pressure. Hence, in order to make up the deficiency, he will not only participate in the activities that Career Planning and Placement Section hold, but also read more business magazines to increase the related knowledge. Huang Chun-ming, a senior of Dept. of Mass Communication, also expressed that Dr. Hung’s analysis of the result of the evaluation questionnaire made him realize what abilities he should have in work field. Since he has already worked as a sales representative, the result of the evaluation helps him a lot.

Chu Pei-ying, Section Chief, Career Planning and Placement Section, indicated that it was the first time for school to design such questionnaire. On the one hand, the Section and two professors, Dr. Huang and Dr. Hung, will keep reviewing and improving the questionnaire. On the other hand, she hoped that in the future, her Section can cooperate with Counseling Section as well as Center for Learning and Teaching to expand the similar activities, offering evaluation and consulting service to help students promote their employability.
