Tsai Meng-chang, fifth year Ph. D. student of Dept. of Mechanical and Electro-Mechanical Engineering, and Chen Cheng-lung, fourth year Ph. D. student of Dept. of Physics, respectively won NSC’s Galloping Horse Grants, each with 1,100,000 NT dollars, to study abroad for one year. Chen Cheng-lung had already studied in the US since last September. Tsai Meng-chang will go to US too in the July of 2009. Among the 178 winners of such a grant, only ten are from private universities. TKU’s students occupy two vacancies.

Tsai Meng-chang, who has delivered conference papers in the foreign countries for many times, will go to National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) for his research on heat pipe loop for one year. Tsai is the only one granted to NASA. His research target, the “Flat Plate Loop Heat Pipe” is a facility in space shuttle, which characterizes by rapid heat conduction. Tsai feels excited to be able to study in NASA, where he expects to absorb everything he could like a sponge.

Chen Cheng-lung, presently studies in Advanced Light Source (ALS) Lab in UC Berkeley. Chen’s research project on “The electronic structures of bismuth-iron-oxide and related multiferroic thim films” features on the important material used in computer memory. Chen points out that he has spent about 13 to 15 hours a day in the lab. He feels great to do experiments and exchange opinions about academic expertise and local cultures with expert from different countries. ( ~Chen Chi-szu )
