Carrie Chang Fine Arts Center Associate Director Chang, Ben-hang, a renowned calligrapher, held a calligraphy class for international students of TKU on October 7 at the L303 classroom. Reporters from local China Television Company also joined the class to cover the story on how foreign students learn the art of calligraphy with the use of the computerized calligraphy writing system developed by the TKU, the "e-calligraphy."
Chang said it is quite difficult for some students to write calligraphy, especially with the part on how to hold the brushes with their hands. But one can learn the methods by using the "e-calligraphy" system. Kuroi Narumi, a freshman in the English Department, said that she had learned how to write calligraphy in Japan during elementary school. Though the Chinese characters are far more complex and difficult to write, Kuroi said that she will continue to practice the art of calligraphy.
During the class, all the foreign students wrote down “yung pao ping an” which means “safety forever” in Chinese with their brushes. In fact, the calligraphy writings done by these first timers were so good that deeply impressed the reporters from CTV. ( ~Yeh Yun-kai )
