New Regulations to Protect Personal Information

Tamkang University will soon adopt new regulations governing the handling of personal information. To explain what the new regulations will entail, a conference will be held this coming Friday, 11th May, at the TKU Tamsui Campus. The conference is to be organized by the Office of Information Services, hosted by the President of TKU, Dr. Flora Chia-I Chang, and will connect attendees at the Tamsui, Taipei, and Lanyang Campuses via webcam.

The new regulations prescribe standards for each step in the handling of personal information, from its collection and processing, to its use, transmission and deletion. Companies that violate such regulations may face fines of up to NT $200 million. Tamkang’s implementation of the new processes will be overseen by the Enterprise Risk Department of Deloitte and Touche. D&T will assist Tamkang to ensure that TKU’s personal information management system conforms to the standards put forward by national laws, as well as to strengthen the overall personal information environment and facilities at Tamkang.

An example of how these new laws will affect TKU administrative procedures can be seen in the posting of name lists. In the future, name lists announcing successful scholarship applicants will only display students’ student numbers and will no longer show students’ names and class numbers.
