At Tamkang University, students are encouraged and in fact required to take any of several English proficiency tests. Students who attain above-average grades may apply to receive a small cash reward of NT $500. This year, a total of 200 students received the cash incentive.
These English proficiency exams include TOEIC, TOEFL, GEPT, and IELTS. In total, 143 students (not including Department of English students) received over 710 points in TOEIC. Meanwhile, 21 students from the Department of English attained a score of 800 or over.
Of particular note was the performance of fourth year Department of Statistics student, Chung Chia-yan, who scored a perfect 990 – the highest possible mark in TOEIC.
