MOE EVALUATES TKU’S COLLEGES OF BUSINESS AND MANAGEMENT, RANKED EXCELLENT

The College of Management (COM) has always been a college earning most profit among public universities in Taiwan. The College of Management of Tamkang University (TKU) has got lesser resource distribution than that of public universities. Therefore, the delegation of Ministry of Education (MOE) suggested that the COM be considered to transform into a globalization-oriented college while TKU be directed at being a research-oriented school.

The result of the whole evaluation was ranked excellent by the delegation.

Under the consignment of MOE, a 17-member delegation organized by the Management Science Society of the Republic of China and led by Prof. Lin Yun of National Taiwan University (NTU) arrived at Tamsui campus last Thursday for a one-day evaluation on Colleges of Business (COB) and Management. TKU President Dr. Chang Horng-jinh officiated at a briefing. Shiau Fung-shyung, Dean of College of Business; and Chen Ting-ko, Dean of College of Management introduced the current situation of colleges, departments or institutes under COB and COM to members of the delegation. In addition to screening the writing documents, members of the delegation have also visited Chueh-sheng Memorial Library, Carrie Chang Fine Arts Center, Business Management Building, and Information Processing Center. They also held symposium with faculty and students’ representatives.

Prof. Huang Ying-chung, Dean of Academic Affairs, National Sun Yat-sen University and concurrently General Convener of the evaluation group, said that the component of teachers needed to make better, the ratio of full-time teachers was slightly low and the research space wasn’t enough. However, he highly confirmed TKU’s efforts to promote its triple objectives. He also praised the efficiency of administrative departments for their contributions.

Chang Shih-chieh, Director of Graduate Institute of Risk Management and Insurance, National Chengchi University, said that the variety of courses TKU offered gave students different choices and praised the fact that the fund raised by the school authorities is directly fed back to the departments or institutes. However, he pointed out that the teachers’ research space was too small which could not hold more than four students at one time.

Prof. Hsu Chen-ming of NTU said that TKU has fully provided various teaching installations and multimedia equipment with which teachers will completely implement a variety of teaching methods. For the undergraduate courses, students should be encouraged to complete double majors, minors and educational courses. Besides, Department of International Trade has equipped with an exclusive characteristics to conduct the courses in English since the 2002- 2003 academic year. Departments of Industrial Economics and Economics have adopted the same method, making the two difficult to be distinguished. He suggested that Department of Economics to offer more courses related to the Asian-Pacific Economic History.

Prof. Hung Mao-wei of NTU lauded highly for the fruitful achievement of the research incentives TKU has adopted. Among the 100 teachers, 40 have obtained subsidies from National Science Council (NSC). The ratio is even higher than many public universities, Prof. Hung said, adding that the excellence can be in parallel with that of NTU and National Chengchi University. He also confirmed the performance of presenting the thesis to international periodicals concentrating on SC2 and SSC2. He, however, pointed out that the research cases presented by the Department of Information Management were too low, hoping that the department would improve.

Sung Kai said that TKU has already developed into a teaching-oriented university as its exclusive characteristics. It is unnecessary to transform into a research-oriented university, he said. He suggested that TKU should transform colleges of Science and Engineering into a research-oriented college while Colleges of Business and Management continue to head for globalization. Sung also confirmed the contribution to promote cross-strait student exchanges TKU has made, which was far ahead of those national universities. He suggested that more scholarships be offered to encourage more students taking part in the cross-strait student exchanges.

Prof. Huang Ying-chung, Dean of Academic Affairs, National Sun Yat-sen University, suggested that more resources be distributed to College of Management while making conclusion. TKU President Dr. Chang Horng-jinh, who obtained a doctoral degree from the Graduate Institute of Management, said that he would spare no efforts to help College of Management gain the same resources and subsidies as those of others.
