362 Freshmen Landed at TKU thru Recommendation/Screening Way

According to TKU Student Recruiting Committee, the outcome of the 2002 successful freshmen having passed the TKU matriculation examination was announced on March 28. The statistics released by Office of Academic Affairs shows that there were 19 departments that held such an examination. Of the 2529 contestants, 362 were admitted. The success rate is 14.31%, a little higher than last year.

With 3 people whose faulty credentials invalided them, the remaining 2526 students took part in the First Phase test. After the elimination process, 896 people were able to attend the interview. But again, subtracting the 78 quitters, only 818 people got into the Second Phase test.

Tamkang e-Times learned that the hottest department this year is Mass Communication: 157 people competing for 5 vacancies; Educational Technology is just as popular: 245 vying for 12 positions. The competition is really tough.

Electrical Engineering and Information Management were doing equally well: there were for each 300 applicants to begin with and the admission rate of the latter was 8%. Business Administration, Statistics and Information Engineering had fewer students than they wished to recruit. But Civic Engineering was the worst of all: their target number would be 36; only 15 showed up, so they admitted 7 in the end.

This year, Public Administration chose not to recruit students this way. According to Prof. Chen Ming-siang, Chair of the Department, they had to stop recruitment for the time being, partly because the level of the students was lower than the average of JCEE this year, and partly because there were so many bogey credentials among would-be applicants.

As for Chemistry, Mechanical Engineering and Aerospace Engineering, they have stopped recruitment thru this way because they ran into difficulties last year.
