Lotto Craze Has Cast a Dark Cloud Over Office of Student Affairs, TKU

To understand TKU students’ involvement in the lotto craze phenomenon, Office of Student Affairs, TKU, started an overall survey from last week till the coming Friday (March 15). The outcome of the survey will be published at the end of this month. By then, we shall know which departments have more nutty students in pursuing the Midas dream and whether this inordinate act has affected the economy of student lives or even their mentality.

The cross the board investigation has included undergraduates (including Continuing Education Bachelor’s Programs students) in 9 colleges and graduate students (including in-service students). And an analysis will follow after the results are made known.

The lotto phenomenon has swept across the island like a tornado. It’s bound to affect students’ lives in TKU. In order to ward off such excessive stories as “I would rather borrow money to buy a lotto than not to have it.” And “To go hungry by feeding oneself with just bread and water: Why? Because I cannot live without a lotto ticket.” The Office of Student Affairs is now facing a tough job: how to counsel the students not to get lost in the woods of “striking rich overnight.”

According to Dr. Keh Huan-chao, Dean of Student Affairs, questions like “How much money you think you have spent on buying lotto tickets every time?” “How much percentage is the lotto consumption in your budget compared to your living expenses?” etc. are set especially to “flush out” the real culprit of the whole evil game.

One project already undertaken in the Military Education and Training courses is to warn students not to be addicted to this harmful habit. If, unfortunately, a student has already gone too far in the woods, necessary counseling action will be taken.
