OUTCOME OF RESEARCH AWARDS: 118 TEACHERS WIN NT$ 17,650,000

TKU provides research awards regulations to encourage academic research, which is divided into two categories. In the first category, teachers who apply with their papers that have been accepted by academic journals will be awarded handsomely once approved by the university: Professors NT$140,000, Associate Professors NT$120,000, Assistant Professors NT$100,000, and Lecturers NT$80,000. In the second category, after those personnel who have applied for the first category awards, they can choose three of their best papers which are collected from the four International A&HCI, SSCI, SCI, and EI indices to apply for the awards in this category. They will be further awarded with NT$30,000 per paper if it meets the university’s criteria.

PROMOTING GLOBLIZATION—TKU’S COLLEGES AND DEPARTMENTS MEET TO REVIEW PROGRESS

President Chang has invited numerous Chairs of Departments of TKU to visit its sister universities in Russian, Japan and Europe this year, resulting in some impressive academic achievements. In this regard, President Chang encouraged all Deans and Chairs of TKU’s colleges to continue with their efforts in establishing future international exchanges with at least one overseas university in his address to the “Review Meeting of International Exchange and International Education” held on last Wednesday, Nov. 26 at the Chueh-sheng International Conference Hall.

SECOND INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE ON ECOLOGICAL DISCOURSE TO BE OPENED ON FRIDAY

The Second International Conference on Ecological Discourse, hosted by the Department of English, will be held at the Chueh-sheng International Conference Hall and Ching-sheng International Conference Hall respectively on Dec. 5th and 6th. This conference will continue to discuss the core issues that were set out in its previous meeting three years ago which were the relationship between Taiwan and global ecology, promotion of eco-literature in Taiwan, and a critical examination of main stream ecological studies. Furthermore, there will be new issues such as exploring and developing eco-literature as well as ecology. Founder Clement C.P. Chang and President Chang Horng-jinh will be there at the conference on the 5th to preside over the opening ceremony.

COLLEGE OF INTERNATIONAL STUDIES RAISES AWARENESS OF THE IMPACT OF THE ENLARGEMENT OF THE EUROPEAN U

The Graduate Institute of European Studies (GES) from the College of International Studies (CIS) hosted a conference on “The European Union’s Enlargement—from the Candidate Countries’ Perspective” last Saturday, Nov. 26th at Ching-sheng International Conference Hall. Over a hundred delegates from Austria, Latvia, Hungary, Portugal, Poland, and Taiwan, attended the event.

PAINTINGS AND CALLIGRAPHY SOLD TO RAISE FUNDS FOR BUILDING CHINESE SCHOOL IN THAILAND

The R.O.C. Culture and Arts Goodwill Mission to Thailand organized by Ministry of Education (MOE), and led by the Director of Carrie Chang Fine Arts Center, Lee Chi-mao was invited by the Chinese International School of Thailand to raise funds for building their school. The group sold Chinese calligraphy and paintings, raising over 2,300,000 baht, which was donated for founding the school. The 16 members of this group returned back to Taiwan last week.

TEN DANGEROUS ROADS AREAS NEAR TAMSUI CAMPUS ANNOUNCED BY OFFICE OF STUDENT AFFAIRS

According to the statistics conducted by the Office of Military Training, which began from 2001 to November this year, the Office of Student Affairs has announced the ten most dangerous zones on the roads around Tamsui Campus. It was meant to remind students not to violate traffic rules so as to minimize the number of traffic accidents.

STUDENT LOANS ARE APPROVED TO 6044 STUDENTS AND REMINDED OF THEIR RESPONSIBILITY

After months of a selection process, 6044 students were eventually approved for a loan, and payments for books and room costs will be dispensed to them in the middle of December. However, the Guidance Section wants to remind all those students to regard loans as a serious matter as many students appear not to comprehend the implications of repayments and interest. In such cases, the consequences can be grave, and may have a life-long effect. According to Miss Jian, in charge of the loans from TKU at the Bank of Taiwan, a student’s loan per semester amounts to approximately NT$ 60,000, which means, NT$ 500,000 after four years should the student choose to have a loan throughout his or her study. It can be a sizable burden once the student begins to pay back the loan, plus its interest, after one year of graduation. It will not be easy for someone who just has his or her first job.

LISTEN TO DANCING? A NEW CHALLENGE TO AUDIO DESCRIPTION OF IMAGES

Appreciating dancing for ordinary people is something they take for granted; however, for visually impaired people, it is nearly impossible. In order to help the latter to overcome such a disability, Professor Chao Ya-ly from the Department of Mass Communication, who runs a workshop developing the technique of audio description, which is to describe images orally has just completed a project of describing dancing with this technique—and is at the pinnacle for such developments.

MASTER WEI-CHUEH TO LECTURE ON FRIDAY AT TKU

As an effort of promoting compassion and wisdom of Buddhism, TKU has invited Master Wei-chueh from Chung-tai Zen Monastery to give a speech at 7 p.m. on Friday, Dec. 5th at the Students Activity Center. The topic of his speech deals with “Pursuing a life with light” and all faculty and students are cordially welcome to participate in this event to search for the spring of our mind and soul that promises to fill our life with hope and light.

VIDEOS OF MUSIC CONCERTS TO BE SHOWN AT CARRIE CHANG MUSIC HALL AT HIGH NOON

Carrie Chang Music Hall will show various music videos as “Music Appreciation at Noon” series at every Tuesday and Thursday noon at 12:10 starting tomorrow onwards. It is hoped to provide a place for faculty and students a venue for rest and relaxation at noon.
