TKU TAKES THE LEAD AMONG PRIVATE UNIVERSITIES IN SUCCESSFUL APPLICATIONS FOR NSC RESEARCH PROJECT GR

The research impetus at Tamkang University is once again reflected in the number of approved applications for National Science Council research project grants. This year 248 projects will receive grants totaling over NT$159,000,000. According to NSC statistics, TKU tops the eight private comprehensive universities in terms of both the number of approved applications and the amount of grants.

NANOTECHNOLOGY RESEARCH SEEKS SUPPORT FROM EXECUTIVE YUAN

Nanotechnology is to be the driving force of industrial development in the 21st century. The newly established Nanotechnology Research Center promises to become the brightest star of Tamkang University. Last week the Center submitted its research proposal to the Executive Yuan in a bid for a large grant from the NT$1,000,000,000 Promotion Plan of International Competitiveness of Higher Education.

The Fourth Symposium of Documentation hosted by the Graduate Institute of Chinese Linguistics and Documentation will be held at Chueh-sheng International Conference Hall this Friday and Saturday (28 and 29 Nov. 2003). More than fifty scholars coming from Taiwan, China and other countries will attend this symposium; among them, besides the eight scholars from China, some even come from Hong Kung, Korea, and America. All of them are going to discuss the theory and application of documentation in the symposium.

A series of “career planning programs” is proceeding by Career Planning and Placement Section, Office of Student Affairs from November 24 through December 5; these programs will help students prepare for their graduate entrance exams, to study abroad, and to project their career plans by providing in-depth speeches and lectures on various topics.

FOUR PUNISHMENTS ARE ISSUED FOR INAPPROPRIATE EXPRESSION ON THE INTERNET

By last week, four punishments that include two “minor demerit,” one “notification,” and one “one-month privilege waiver” were issued for inappropriate expression on the Internet, based on the Praise and Punishment Rules for Students. Dean of the Office of Student Affairs, Ding-an Chiang, advised that students should manage rather than abuse their freedom of speech on the Internet and avoid hurting people by language. Also, he claims that the school will continue to mediate such misconduct based on related laws and regulations.
