School Team Wins Six Gold, Four Silver and Eight Bronze Medals in College Games: Swimming Team Three

College Games, postponed by SARS last year, was hosted by Ministry of Education this March. After five days of intense competitions, the event was over at Taichung College of Physical Education last Tuesday (March 9). Field-and-track team and other eight represented Tamkang to the event, totally winning six gold, four silver and eight bronze medals, and other 36 categories from the fourth to eighth place. Swimming team won three gold medals, Chen Chao-hsin two golds in field-and-track competition, and Liu Hao-ming one gold for tennis team.

Ministry of Education Supervises Subsidies Spending; Committee Members Highly Approve

Commended by Ministry of Education (MOE), the Management Sciences Association of Taiwan visited Tamkang last Monday (March 8), supervising private universities’ execution of the subsidies sponsored by MOE for overall development. The coordinator of the committee Professor Hsu Chi-pin, Department of Chemical Engineering, National Taiwan University (NTU), expressed highly positive recognition of Tamkang.

Meeting of Student Affairs, held at Ching-Sheng International Conference Hall last Friday (March 12), approved freshman twin-counselor system and revised part of the regulations on class counselors.

BINGO GAME AND AEROBICS ENLIVEN WOMEN STAFF’S ANNUAL MEETING

The Association of Women Staff of Tamkang University held its fifth annual general meeting, attended by over two hundred staff, on Tuesday, March 9 in celebration of International Women’s Day. Besides the routine reports on the Association’s activities, there were “Good Feeling” aerobics and bingo games at the meeting: everyone got a prize and had a wonderful time.

ROLE-PLAY HELPS STUDENTS EXPERIENCE WHAT IS LIKE TO BE THE DISADVANTAGED

“Careful! Don’t make me bang my head on the door of the elevator,” cried the blind-faked Wang Yu-chun (freshman, Information Management) to her “guide dog”. Wang and the other students enrolled in Dr. Chen Chien-fu’s “Disadvantaged Groups and Social Welfare” were role-playing the visually impaired and “guide dogs” to experience the inconvenience of people with disabilities.

DISABLED STUDENTS CONSIDER BRICK TRAIL FOR THE BLIND UNRELIABLE

Tamkang University is a designated model of barrier-free campus, yet there are lots of barriers around the campus. At the recent meeting of the student council Councilor Li Ker-han (senior, Public Administration) put forward several proposals for improvement of access for the disabled: adding wheel-chair access to the student clubs offices, and removing the metal barriers outside the natatorium complex, those near the entrance to the parking lot of the Business and Management Building, and those close to the Li-bar footbridge. These proposals were passed by the student council and will be formally presented to the school authorities for consideration; student councilors wished to see more facilities in place ensuring easier physical access for disabled students.

A COOL CULTURAL WEEK: ICE-EATING AND BEER-DRINKING CONTESTS

Last week, various high school alumnus associations organized joint activities to introduce their local cultures. Under the unusual blazing sunshine of early spring, some of them held ice-eating and beer-drinking contests on Poster Street. Others displayed the distinctive cultures of their hometown in the Exhibition Hall of B-Building (EHOB).

TKU WON THE GOLDEN THROAT CHORUS TOURNAMENT AGAIN

The 9th Chung-shan Cup Golden Throat Chorus Tournament was held on March 6, 2004, at National Dr. Sun Yat-sen Memorial Hall. TKU Chorus beat other nine college teams and won the first prize.

QUORUM OF STUDENT COUNCIL YET TO BE FORMED: 2 OUT OF 5 WERE ELECTED IN BY-ELECTION

The 12th Student Council By-election took place last Thursday. Five candidates registered for this election and ran for the thirty-four seats remain in Student Council; however, only two candidates won enough votes to be elected. The two newly elected student senators are Yu Meng-che, a sophomore in the Department of Public Administration, who got 62 votes, and Cheng Hsin-der, a senior at the Department of Water Resources and Environmental Engineering, who had 64 votes. In responding to such an unsatisfactory result, the council speaker, Chen Bo-chun declared his disappointment by saying, “We have done our best to remind our fellow students to exercise their rights; nevertheless, it is a pity that they are still reluctant to partake in student self-governing affairs.”

GREAT FILMS & TV SHOWS FOR LITERATURE WEEK

Every year the five departments of College of Liberal Arts take turn to host the activities of Literature Week. This year, Dept. of Mass Communication will take charge of the whole exhibition with a focus on the development of film and TV industry in the latest two years. Films will be shown and seminars will be hold to display “ New Visions in Taiwan Film and TV”.
