EVALUATION OF SUBSIDIES SPENDING TAKES PLACE TODAY

Ministry of Education (MOE) requested the Management Sciences Association of Taiwan to set up a program to evaluate and review the management of the subsidies for private universities provided by MOE for inter-university integrated research projects. The evaluative committee of the program is arriving TKU in the morning of March 8 for a day’s visit.

FOREIGN LANGUAGES PROFICIENCY TEST TO BE HELD THIS SATURDAY

The first foreign languages proficiency test, organized by the College of Foreign Languages (CFL), will be held at 10:00 a.m. this Saturday, March 13. All students from the College who entered TKU in 2000 and will graduate this year should participate in.

ANTI-SARS NO. 1 COMPOUNDS AGAINST SARS TO BE PRODUCED AT TKU

TKU signed an agreement with the University of Taiwan University (NTU) last week to produce compounds, named “NTU Anti-SARS No. 1” designed and synthesized by both universities last year. NTU specifically authorized Lee Shih-yuan, the Chair of TKU’s Department of Chemistry to proceed with its current production capacity of 10 kilos of pure (>99%) compounds per week for commercial uses. They will be supplied to manufacturers for the production of facemasks and protective clothing. These compounds are specifically designed to adhere to the SARS virus and destroy its functionality and its infectiousness.

DIALOGUE OF GREAT MINDS THIS SATURDAY

The Industrial and Business Friendship Club of TKU Alumni is hosting a series of events entitled “Dialogue with Great Masters”. The first will be held at TKU’s Taipei campus at 4:00 p.m. this Saturday (March 13). The ‘great masters’ that are Chen Fei-lung, a TKU alumnus and the Chairman of Nan-chiao Group and Chen Ding-ko, the Dean of TKU’s College of Management. They will be talking about the strategies of grasping new directions on market trends in the 21st century.

OFFICIALS FROM JAPAN SISTER UNIVERSITY ARRIVE FOR A VISIST

Last Thursday, March 4, Feng Chao-kang, the Vice President for Academic Affairs, welcomed the four administrative officials from the University of Electro-Communications of Japan (UEC), at a reception held at Room L522, College of Liberal Arts Building. During the reception, Feng commented on the significance of their visit by stating that it symbolizes a major step in tightening the sister ties of the two universities not only in academic affairs but also administratively. The four officials will stay for four days to visit five administrative offices of TKU, which are General Affairs, Academic Affairs, Comptroller, Personnel and Chueh Sheng Memorial Library respectively.

CULTURAL WEEK—TASTY FOOD AWAITS

Want a taste of all the delicious food from all over Taiwan? Here comes your chance this week. A 2004 United Cultural Week, hosted by eight alumni associations from various regions, opens this week on the Poster Street and the University Commons. Over there, you will be able to taste the ambrosia from places such as Wanruan, Taichung, Penghu Islands and Hualien. The mouth-watering foods on offer include pork feet, chicken claws, traditional Chinese pastry, and sticky cakes.

NT$ 2,000,000 DONATED TO TKU, THE HIGHEST AMOUNT FROM ONE SINGLE CONTRIBUTOR AMONG FACULTY AND STAFF

Lu Ching-tang, the Deputy Director of the Office of Alumni Services and Resources Development (OASRD) donated NT$ 2,000,000 to the university some days ago making him the most generous contributor from a single person ever among TKU faculty and staff. Lu retired from his professorship in 2002, but continues to work for the university as a faculty and administrative staff on a contractual basis. He donated this money from his pension fund to demonstrate his appreciation on how TKU has enriched his life and hopes to inspire other alumni to follow his generosity in terms of donating.

BUSINESS ADMINISTRATION DEPARTMENT RECOMMENDS STUDENTS TO CHINA TRUST FOR INTERNSHIP

The Department of Business Administration (DBA) has been cooperating with the China Trust (CT) in setting up an internship program. The department has recommended its top students to be the interns at the Trust, hoping such a scheme will benefit both parties in the long run. Consequently, Huang Yu-jin, Chen Chang-zhi and their classmates of the junior year, nine of them in total, joined at one of China Trust branches in Taipei last week and are presently being given a week’s basic training. After this training, they will be assigned to different jobs behind the counter performing various administrative works as part of their internship. Those who can complete their internship with outstanding performance will have the chance of staying on at CT after their graduation.

ONLY FOUR CANDIDATES REGISTER FOR A SECOND STUDENT COUNCIL ELECTION

The 12th student council second election will take place between 9:00 a.m. and 6:00 p.m. on Wednesday and Thursday (March 10 and 11), and the results will be announced on Thursday evening. Due to a lack of candidates that ran for the council some months ago, there are only 26 council members at present, which is a short fall of 34 members required on the council. This coming election was expected to rectify this situation, however, there have been only 4 candidates registered so far. If one of them fails to get enough votes, the council speaker, Chen Bo-chun, warns that the council will not even meet the minimum of 30 members to reach a quorum required for important decisions.

A PLACE TO SIT? ON A SPIDER WEB, BALLOONS OR ROPES?

There have been some 40 odd strange objects installed all over the campus, which attract some puzzling and curious stares from everyone. What we witness are the results of the works created by the first year students of the Department of Architecture under the project entitled “Installation of seats”. For example, the colorful balloons on the trees around the corner of the College of Liberal Arts; a spider web in the Garden for the Blind behind the Business and Management Building; ropes on the trees on the Shepard’s Meadow by the Post Office and some more seat-like objects by the Girls’ Dormitory.
