ON-LINE CHINESE AND JAPANESE JOINT CALLIGRAPHY EXHIBITION: RECRUITING WORKS!

TKU has made an agreement with Kyoto Tachibana Women's Univ. to hold joint on-line calligraphy exhibition. Starting from next semester, every semester each school will select 24 works by students and display them on the web. Dept. of Chinese and Calligraphy Research Center are responsible for recruiting works from TKU students. Those students who are interested in this exhibit can send their works to Calligraphy Research Room, Carrie Chang Fine Arts Center by the end of August 2004. The content and format of the works are free by the participants. In early September, the committee will select 24 works, photograph them, and then show them on the web. The participants can take back their originals in the mean time.

54 NEW STUDENTS ENROLL THE ENGLISH-ONLY CLASS IN DEPT. OF INTERNATIONAL TRADE

Department Of International Trade has practiced the system of teaching their freshmen exclusively in English for one year. Continuing the method used in previous year, the enrollment for this English-only class is through application, with maximally 60 students. The enrollment for the new school year rises from 41 to 54. Chair Prof. Lin Jyh-horng remarks that such an increase in enrollment indicates the public recognition of the new system.

GREATER SHOWS AFTER COMMENCEMENT:

In addition to the conventional commencement, in which only the representatives receive the diplomas, most TKU departments hold original graduation ceremonies today (June 5, 2004) to make every graduate not only receive his or her diploma from the hands of teacher but also earn the best wishes from the school community.

STUDENT CLUB ASSESSMENT:

TKU Student Club Evaluation and Prize Giving Ceremony was held on Student Activity Center at two o’clock this Monday (June 5, 2004). The Alumni Association of Kaoshung and nine other clubs have won the Special Honor, and the Torch Light Club and the other 34 clubs were awarded with the Honorable Mention. Moreover, a total of six student clubs: the Truth Club, Orchestra Club, the Alumni Association of Keelong City, the Alumni Association of Sanchong and Lujou City, and Makeup Club will be given the Best Improving Clubs, a prize added this year. The Alumni Association of Kaoshung District, KangFu Club, Tzuyu Club and the Association of Business Administration, along with Chinese Music Club will receive special awards for winning the Special Honor for three consecutive years. The president of TKU, Dr. Horng-jinh Chang also attended this ceremony and gave the certificates and prizes to the winners of the writing contest regarding the theme of “Marching toward Tamkng’s Fourth Wave.”

NICKNAMING HAS COME INTO STYLE IN YEARBOOK THIS YEAR

Speaking of yearbook, it is almost the same as lists of names and rows of bachelor photos. However, “anonymity” design seems to come into fashion in yearbook this year. Some classes’ editors omit the names of their classmates while some use the nicknames to replace the real names. More and more classes do not put traditional graduation photos on the pages, and some even put not any picture in the yearbook.

The policy of “chip-system business administration,” a new course of College of Management, is changed: the original required one and a half year is reduced to one year, and students fulfilling the course requirement can receive certificates.

Maritime Museum of TKU Celebrates Her Birthday

Maritime Museum is holding her birthday party today (June 5)! Huo-Li Percussion Band’s performance starts from 11:10. A ten-minute competition, held for graduates’ “speaking out,” starts at 11:45─contestants yell through the microphone “I have graduated,” and the top five with the loudest voice will be awarded precious gifts.

37 TAMKANG PHDS SET A NEW RECORD

According to Office of Academic Affairs, 37 doctoral students received their Ph.D. degrees this year, and this number, 6 more than last year (31), set a record in Tamkang’s history. The Department of Computer Science and Information Engineering, in particular, tops all departments by giving out 11 PhDs.
