14 OF TKU STUDENTS WIN OUTSTANDING YOUTH AWARDS

Yeh Chih-chen, a second year graduate student at the Graduate Institute of Water Resources and Environmental Engineering, together with 13 other TKU students have been awarded by the China Youth Corps. as the 2005 Outstanding College Youths. They received their awards at the weekly meeting held in the afternoon of March 28th at the Student Activity Center of Tamsui Campus. Furthermore, Yeh represented them to collect their awards at the Jiantan Youth Activity Center last Thursday whereas Su Chuan-kai, one of the awardees, a senior at the English Department, accepted the awards on everyone’s behalf in a ceremony held in Taipei County.

TKU PRESIDENT RECEIVES WARM WELCOME IN JAPAN

BUSINESS AND MANAGEMENT ARE HOT AMONG MASTERS PROGRAMS

Based on the statistics compiled from the applications for the entrance examination of Masters programs at TKU this year, 5753 people registered for the exam for 681 places, which makes the odds to stand at 11% of being accepted to a graduate school of Tamkang. The exam took place last Saturday, March 27th and results will be announced on May 5th.

FRIENDLY GATHERINGS DAZZLED WITH ACADEMIC EXCHANGES

In celebration of the arrival of spring, both Graduate Institutes of Strategic Studies (GISS) and Japanese Studies (GIJS) invited their alumni for a feast of cherry and azalea blossoms on Tamsui Campus last week. Flowers aside, brainpower was also on show. The latter invited Ku Kuan-ming, National Strategic Minister without Portfolio, to give a speech, whereas the former invited three eminent scholars to discuss matters of academic importance on this occasion.

PHOTOGRAPHY EXHIBITION OF TAIPEI COUNTY ARTISTS UNVEILS AT CCFAC

There is a photography exhibition currently on show at the Carrie Chang Fine Arts Center (CCFAC) with 53 pieces of work by 53 artists resided in Taipei County. The center is one of the many venues in this region that host simultaneously the “2005 Joint-exhibition of Germany and Taipei County Artists” organized by the County Government. The works exhibited here on campus also include some from TKU staff and faculty, such as Feng Wen-hsing of Instructional Technology Section and Cheng Chang-shen of the Center of General Education and Core Curriculum. As each artist is only allowed to have one piece on show, all the works selected at the center are certainly the creme de la creme—the best of the best.

PAR-LEZ VOUS FRANCAIS? JOIN THE WORLD TO CELEBRATE THE FRENCH-SPEAKING DAY

Lee Pei-wha, a professor from the French Department, who is also the secretary in chief of the French Teacher Association, Taiwan, led 26 students to attend a dinner gala celebrating the “French-speaking Day” on March 18 in Taipei. Apart from local students, delegates from 8 Franco-phone countries also attended the event to honor such a special day that is celebrated by over 100 French-speaking countries worldwide.

MANY STUDENT CLUBS FACE CUTBACK DUE TO SHORTAGE OF FUNDING

Several clubs have asked the university for transparency on fees when using university premises for activities outside normal hours. In particular, the Harmonica Club, Earth Environmental Protection Club and Er Chi High School Alumni Association raised this issue last Wednesday, March 23rd at the Club Advisory Meeting. In response, the Office of the General Affairs (OGA) explained that whatever fees the clubs pay to the university was for the overtime work the janitors have to put in rather than into the university’s purse.

SCHOLARSHIPS FROM THE ALUMNI ASSOCIATION TO BE AWARDED

Several scholarship programs organized by the Office of Alumni Services and Resources Development have announced the recipients who are expected to collect their awards tomorrow noon in Rm. 680 of the New Engineering Building. Only those appear in person are eligible for the scholarship.

NO SURVEY, NO GRADUATION

Due to a new regulation set by the Ministry of Education, which puts a survey on “the career choices” of the graduates as an important index for the future overall university assessment, the Office of the Student Affairs (OSA) reminds this year’s graduates to fill out this form on the net (http://163.13.223.100) before they can proceed to the registration for graduation. In other words, if they want to collect their diploma, well, they will have to complete such a survey first. No survey, no graduation.
