LANYANG CAMPUS AIMS FOR GREEN BUILDING LOGO

The Founder of Tamkang University, Dr. Clement C. P. Chang, has instructed that the Lanyang Campus must acquire the “Green Building” logo awarded to buildings in compliance with modern environmental standards. Application will be sent in early April to Chinese Architecture and Building Center for approval.

PRESIDENT CHANG VISITS TWO SISTER UNIVERSITIES IN JAPAN TOMORROW

President Flora C. I. Chang, together with Vice President for Academic Affairs, Feng Chao-kang, Director of International Exchanges and International Education, Chen Hwei-mei, and Chair of Department of Japanese, Peng Chuen-yang, will be visiting two of Tamkang University’s sister institutions in Japan—Nagasaki University and Nagasaki University of Foreign Studies—from Tuesday to Thursday (March 22 to 24). President Chang will have talks with administrators of both universities and sign a memorandum of student exchange agreement with Nagasaki University.

CHAO YA-LY ELECTED PRESIDENT OF WOMEN STAFF ASSOCIATION

Having elected twelve new directors and supervisors at its fifth annual general meeting, the Women Staff Association of Tamkang University proceeded last Tuesday (March 15) to elect Professor Chao Ya-ly, Dean of the College of Liberal Arts, as its new president, Dr. Huang Hong-chu, University Librarian, as vice president, and re-elect Dr. Chen Jui-chih of Department of Accounting as Chief Supervisor.

TQM SYMPOSIUM HELD ON MARCH 21

The Total Quality Management Symposium was held on March 21 at Chueh Sheng International Conference Hall and Ching Sheng International Conference Hall. Dr. Chan Shih-hong, President of Yuan Ze University, who won the Fourteenth National Award for Quality Management, was invited to share his experience in managing the school with TKU faculty. Dr. Tung Wan, Secretary-General of Office of Secretariate, gave a speech entitled “From Tamkang Quality Award to National Quality Award.”

PRESIDENT WAS SATISFIED WITH THE QUALITY OF THE ON-GOING TWO CONSTRUCITONS

President, Dr. Flora C. I. Chang, together with Dean of Office of General Affairs, Chin-jen Hung, and Chief of Construction & Repairs Section, Yi-shan Chiang, inspected the construction of Foreign Languages Building and the Gynasium last Tuesday (March 15). The former is expected to be completed in May this year, while the latter will be completed in next summer vacation. President Chang was satisfied with the quality of the two constructions. She indicated that Foreign Languages Building was a bright architecture, and with grand French windows on each floors, users will feel comfortable with the clear light, pleasant bird-chirping, and fragrance of the plants. The wall of the portal, as that of the gymnasium, is made of granite. “Teachers and students who live and study here will feel very homely,” President Chang remarked.

SEVEN SCHOOLS COMPETED WITH REMOTE UNMANNED AERIAL VEHICLES:

Hosted by Chinese Aerospace Association and organized by Department of Aerospace Engineering, TKU, the 26th Great Flight Cup Championship took place at Tamsui campus on March 12 and 13. Among the various competitors, TKU team, led by Professor Der-ming Ma, beat the other teams (seven schools and nine groups) and won the first place, the award for best report, and the award for best production in “Competition of Remote Unmanned Aerial Vehicles.” The last time TKU received the championship was five years away, in the year of 2000.

WHERE TO FIND THE IMPECCABLE?

Last Wednesday (March 16) at University Commons, an audition was held to recruit actors for TKU’s first enrollment video “When the Impeccable Man Falls in Love with Long-haired Piao-Piao.” After intensive competition, the leading actress “Piao-Piao,” about whom students are most curious, was not found yet. As for the leading actor “the Impeccable Man,” four candidates, including Kuo Wei-hsian (freshman from Dept. of Civil Engineering), Wu Wei-chin (junior from Dept. of Computer Science and Information Engineering), and Hong Yuan (sophomore form Dept. of International Trade ) and Yu Chia-wei (junior from Dept. of Spanish), had a neck-to-neck tie. The organizer is going to hold another audition for the final decision.

KEN-DO TEAM FROM CHUO GAKUIN UNIVERSITY, JAPAN, FRIENDLY COMBAT WITH TKU

“After twenty years’ waiting, we come to TKU immediately after the first step in Taiwan,” said Kitahara, the supervisor and coach-in-chief of Chuo University. He led the ken-do team of 28 students to TKU on 12 March, and had friendly combats and demonstrations at Student Activity Center with TKU’s ken-do team and alumni ken-do team, and other players form National Physical Education College, Taipei Physical Education College, and other institutions.

TKU CHORUS CONTINUE TO HOLD THE CHAMPIONSHIP AT THE 10TH NATION-WIDE YAT-SEN CUP

The 10th Nation-Wide Yat-Sen Cup Golden Voice Chorus Contest was held at National Dr. Sun Yat-set Memorial Hall on March 12, 2005, and Tamkang University Chorus defeated six groups from other colleges, continuing to hold the championship of Student Section this year.

TKU PHILOSOPHY CLUB HELD CLASSICS-READING CLASS TO SERVE COMMUNITY

The club members of TKU Philosophy Club have been doing community services in Yu Ying Elementary School of Tamsui. They hold the course of Reading Ancient Chinese Classics for children in every Monday morning in that particular school, and teach third-to sixth-grade students how to read ancient Chinese classics. They teach The Three-Character Scripture to third-grader and fourth-grader, and The Analects of Confucius for fifth-graders and sixth-graders. Chang Chao-yu, a senior of the Department of Chinese, said that “It makes me feel so good when the children trust you and like you!”
