WOMEN STAFF COUNCIL ELECTS NEW COUNCIL MEMBERS

The second council meeting of the fifth annual meeting of the Women Staff Council opened last Tuesday (March 8th) at Ching Sheng International Conference Hall amid some challenging quizzes on hottest gossips in Taiwan as well as serious international issues. These quizzes incited roars of laughter throughout the meeting as everyone did their best in finding the wittiest and smartest answers. Of course, the fact that winners could collect delightful awards (21 of them!) donated by Dr. Flora Chang certainly enhanced the heat of the competition and the fun of the game.

COLLEGE OF LIBERAL ARTS SHOWCASE FINE TASTE IN LITERATURE AND ARTS

A series of activities and exhibitions in the Week of Liberal Arts will unveil in the next five days from today (March 14th) onwards. This year’s organizer, the Department of Information and Library Science (ILS), oversees events in three categories: Libraries, Multi-media and Publishing, which are all under the theme of The Richness of Pictures and Words” that symbolizes an intimate dialog between liberal arts and social sciences. In this week, you will see the finest results from the students and faculty of the college in the past year. The head of the departmental association, Chang Suan-han, is hopeful that this week’s activities serve as the best showcase for what his fellow students and the faulty members are capable of.

MAJOR SEMICONDUCTOR MANUFACTURERS INVITE INTERNS

Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC) and Microsoft Taiwan Corporation have invited students of several universities to do summer job internship as well as one-year internship at their companies. Those who are interested can apply on line from today onwards.

The homepage of Tamkang University got a face lift! As this year being the official beginning of Tamkang 4th Wave, there is nothing more appropriate than having a new homepage to symbolize a new era. Both Chinese and English versions all received a complete overhaul.

FORUM ON RUSSIAN AFFAIRS PREDICTS A GREAT PARTNERSHIP

The Graduate Institute of Russian Studies (GIRS) hosted a one-day forum to discuss the current situations of Russian interior policies and diplomacy last Friday, March 11th at Ching Sheng Building. The institute invited the deputy director from the Moscow -Taipei Office Economic and Cultural Coordination Commission in Taipei to open the forum, which included several renowned scholars in this field who came for presentations and discussion sessions. The director of the GIRS, Vladimir Maliavin, was there to give an opening speech on his perspectives over Russian affairs. He and the Russian representative were both hopeful that with such an open forum, more open discussions on Russian could snowball. The closing ceremony was presided by Dean Tai Wan-chin of the College of International Studies.

SYMPOSIUM ON SINOLOGY CO-HOSTED BY TKU OPENS ON US SOIL

The first Chinese American Canadian Sinology Symposium was held on February 17th and 18th at the California State University (CSU), Sacramento, one of TKU’s sister university. The sponsors, apart from the host university, included TKU and the University of British Colombia of Canada, organized this first-time ever event on “Eastern and Western Culture and Their Living Aesthetics ”, signaling an increasing emphasis on the study of Sinology in the West.

TKU INTENSIFIES PREPARATION FOR ACADEMIC EVALUATION

The Taiwan Assessment and Evaluation Association (TAEA) will arrive TKU on March 17th and 18th for inspection. This is the first time MOE outsourced such an important project on evaluation of college academic affairs and execution of government-sponsored projects to a private organization such as the TAEA, whose members will meet Dr. Flora Chang, the university president, for briefing upon their arrival. These members of approximately 60 experts will come in two groups: The first group is expected on the 17th conducting evaluation on ‘specific academic/research groups’, while the second group on the 18th inspecting the management and execution of integrated projects as well as teaching quality.

SINO-JAPANESE ALUMNI ASSOCIATION IS BORN

Reitaku University, a sister university of TKU from Japan, has established a “Tamkan-Reitaku Alumni Association” with TKU last Friday, March 11, turning a new page for a deeper cooperation between these two universities. This inauguration was launched when the dean of Reitaku’s College of Economics, Osamu Nariai, accompanied by Kazunobu Horiuchi, its director of the Office of International Exchanges and four other senior faculty members, arrived last Wednesday, March 9th, for a friendly visit.
