GLOBAL VIEWS: TKU HAS WON IN “ENTREPRENEURS’ FAVORITE GRADUATES” SURVEY FOR THE THIRD TIME

TQM CONFERENCE: TKU NEEDS TO ENHANCE PROBLEM FINDING ABILITY AND QUALITY CONTROL CIRCLE

“2008 Academic Year TQM Conference” was held on May 1 at Chuehsheng International Conference Hall and Chingsheng International Conference Hall, and the event took place concurrently in Langyang campus via video conference. The seminar featured on “Setting QCC, Substantiating TQM,” in which the keynote speaker Mr. Wang Pai-jung, Vice Manager of TOYOTA, suggested the school to improve students, staff and faculty’s problem-finding ability to enhance quality control. Dr. Flora C.I. Chang, President of TKU, expressed in the opening ceremony that there is some distance between TKU’s “Quality Control Circle” (QCC) and enterprises’. “We still need to improve ourselves,” said President Chang. She asked every unit of TKU to make a plan to execute QCC thoroughly after the conference.

EU WEEK TO BE LAUNCHED IN TKU FROM MAY 8

European Union Week, a week-long event co-organized by TKU Graduate Institute of European Studies, Chueh-Sheng Memorial Library, and TKU Center for EU Studies, will be launched on May 8. The EU week, featuring with a series of activities, including seminars, quiz contest, book fair, introduction to European movies, is inviting TKU faculty as well as students to take part in to learn more about the economic and political union of 27 member states, located primarily in Europe.

FIRST GRADUATION CEREMONY FOR LANGYANG CAMPUS TO BE HELD ON JUNE 6: 126 GRADUATES, 8 AWARDS

The first graduation ceremony for the 126 graduates in Tamkang University’s Langyang Campus will be held on June 6 at Clement Chang International Conference Hall in the campus located in Yilan County. Dr. Lin Jyh-horng, director of Lanyang Campus said that the graduation ceremony will use English in presentation only. Even more special, an award entitled “chin chu yu lang,” with the double meanings—“that the pupil surpasses the master,” and “the distinguished graduates form Yilan”—will be granted to graduates who have distinguished performances during their college days.

CHAT CORNER SET UP TO ENCOURAGE INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS TO LEARN CHINESE

To enhance bilateral exchanges between local and international students as well as to encourage foreign students to practice Chinese, Office of International Exchanges and International Education has set up a “Chat Corner” at Foreign Language Building. Director of the Office, Dr. Lee Pei-wha said that her office has recruited local students to serve as chat leaders in the chat corner, in the aim of helping foreign students to elevate their Chinese language skill.

SCHOLARS AND EXPERTS SHARED EXPERIENCE IN THE CONFERENCE ON “PROMOTING COMPETITIVENESS IN JOB MARKET”

Featuring the topic “Your Future Depends on Your Actual Ability,” the conference on “Promoting Competitiveness in Job Market,” co-held by TKU and Cheers Magazine, took place on May 6 at Chung-cheng Hall, Taipei Campus. The conference invited many scholars and experts such as Pai Chung-liang, President of Ogilvy & Mather Taiwan, and Lee Ming-yuan, President of McDonald, Taiwan, to share their opinions on the related issues, attracting nearly 250 persons from TKU and other places to attend.

DR. CHI-LING WANG BECAME MEMBER OF RISK THEORY SOCIETY

Dr. Chi-Ling Wang, a professor in Tamkang University’s Department of Insurance became a member of the Risk Theory Society after attending the society’s annual meeting held last month in University of Texas Austin, USA. The Risk Theory Society is a group of economists, financial economists, and actuaries who undertake theoretical and applied researches in the areas of insurance economics, financial economics related to insurance markets, actuarial science, and more generally in the economic analysis of risk and uncertainty.

WEBSITE MAINTAINING TO BE INCLUDED IN MOE’S EVALUATION

The Ministry of Education will include a college’s website maintaining as one of the categories for higher education evaluation in the future. Facing the upcoming move to be initiated by the MOE, Tamkang University’s Information Processing Center held a seminar on website globalization on May 5th, inviting Ruling Digital Inc Chief Executive Officer Cheng Wai-lun and the company’s Senior Advisor Mark Hammons to deliver a speech on how to globalize the school’s website.
