TKU Culture Week: ‘‘Take me Traveling’’

Culture Week has officially begun! Despite the chilly weather and drizzling rain, teachers and students have been out in numbers, sampling the delicacies on offer at the various stalls across the Tamsui Campus. The theme of Culture Week is ‘‘Take me Traveling’’. Appropriately, the white and red umbrella-covered stalls that line the campus’ ‘‘Poster Street’’ have been selling specialty foods from various regions around Taiwan. These include brown sugar cakes from Peng Hu, rice-flour noodles from Hsin Chu, cream pastries from Kaohsiung, dried bean curd from Taoyuan, sun cakes from Taichung, as well as pineapple cakes, malt cakes, and salted pork from Keelong. At this time every year, Poster Street is bathed in a delicious mix of aromas.

Indonesian Instant Noodles a Hit during Overseas Chinese Week

Overseas Chinese Student Week has begun! To celebrate, the Overseas Chinese Student Guidance Section of the TKU Office of Student Affairs is holding an exhibition that will display the wares and cultural traditions of countries in which overseas Chinese typically reside: Macau, Hong Kong, and Singapore.

The 2010 Academic Year National Music Competition

At the beginning of March, various TKU music-based clubs and societies took part in the 2010 Academic Year National Music Competition. Out of 670 teams, TKU earned awards in several musical categories, including wind instrument, classical Chinese music, and harmonica.

A Surge in Numbers at the Chung-ling Chemistry Competition

On Saturday March 5, Tamkang University held the 6th annual Chung-ling Creative Chemistry Competition. Every year since its inception, the number of entrants in the competition (high school students) has increased steadily. This year, the competition drew a total of 690 participants (230 teams), including students from the best high schools in North and Central Taiwan.

Launching the Mobile Chemistry Lab

2011 is the International Year of Chemistry. So throughout 2011, the International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry (IUPAC) together with the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) will be holding a range of Chemistry-related activities in numerous countries around the world. The International Year of Chemistry is a joint initiative by IUPAC and UNESCO. It celebrates the 100th anniversary of IUPAC’s inception and marks 100 years since Marie Sklodowska-Curie broke a host of records by being the first person to receive two Nobel prizes. It is also designed to celebrate the essential role of chemistry in our daily lives.

A Show of Brilliance from Visiting Kendo Team

On the 5th of March, the kendo team from Japan’s Chuo University came to TKU’s Tamsui Campus to take part in a friendly kendo meet. The 34 – member kendo team was received by the Director of the TKU Office of International Exchange and International Education, Dr. Pei Wha CHI LEE. Director LEE noted that this is the Chuo University kendo team’s third visit to TKU. She added that TKU has frequent interaction with its Japanese partner universities, and that this form of martial arts-based exchange is very meaningful. Meanwhile, the visiting team’s team captain politely remarked that it is an honor to partake in this form of exchange with TKU’s kendo team.

TKU Science Students Seal Success

TKU Department of Japanese Professor Emeritus, Dr. Lin Pih-siung, recently won the 11th annual Japanese Memoir Contest held by the Japanese Memoir History Association. The official award ceremony will be held in Tokyo on the 5th of May. Dr. Lin was the recipient of the 3rd TKU Golden Eagle Award. His award-winning memoir chronicles his life experiences and his tragic loss after the 228 Massacre in Taiwan.

TKU students will have a chance to evaluate teaching standards at TKU

From March 14 - 27, TKU students will have a chance to evaluate teaching standards at TKU. TKU students can complete the anonymous survey online at http://info.ais.tku.edu.tw/tas/. Students without access to a home computer can fill in the online form at TKU’s computer laboratories.

Alumni Return to Welcome Spring

On March 19, TKU held its annual Alumni Spring Gathering. The first item on the day’s fun-filled agenda was the welcome ceremony, held at 10am, simultaneously at both the Tamsui Campus Student Activity Center and the Lanyang Campus Clement Chang International Conference Hall. During the welcome ceremony, TKU played a short film that introduced the origin and development of Tamkang University. This was followed by a performance by the TKU Alumni Choir, a raffle draw, and a flag presentation ceremony.
