The 8th Annual Talent and Creativity Contest

Students from the TKU Department of Computer Science and Information Engineering recently formed a team and entered the 8th annual Talent and Creativity Contest. Out of over 200 such teams from around Taiwan, the TKU team outclassed students from National Taiwan University, Tsing Hwa University, and various other leading institutes, to claim a silver medal in the group ‘mobile device software applications’. Their prize, which they received on the 8th of April, included a silver medal and an NT$60,000 cash prize.

“Come on, come on! We can do it!” screams TKU soccer team captain, Ricardo B. Abrego Abrego, to encourage team members while on the soccer field. As the talisman of the Tamkang team line up, his presence on the pitch always settles the nerves of his fellow teammates. When asked of their opinion of the team captain, his teammates immediately turn their thumb up, smile, and exclaim “he’s the perfect person for the job”.

Tamkang Soccer Team Thrashes Opposition in Grand Final
The TKU soccer team played with a sense of unity and professionalism to claim top spot in the Taiwan University Soccer League.

Last week, on Thursday April 7, the Tamkang University soccer team trounced a local Taiwanese college team to win the grand final of the University Football League. During the game, in recognition of TKU’s 60th anniversary, the team donned bright red uniforms, which not only symbolized ‘good fortune’, but also successfully drew the crowd’s attention. The coach of the TKU team, Associate Professor Chen Yi-Cheng, said that “the use of sound strategies and improved training methods was the key to victory”.

In the recent Taipei Literature Festival, held by the Taipei City government, TKU Chinese Literature PhD candidate, Zhang Fu-jun, won top honors in the ‘Classical Poem’ category. Fu-jun explained that the poem “combined the sights I’ve seen in Taipei with the events in history that I have learned about”. Upon winning the prize, he said “I’m so happy to have gotten first place and grateful to have been affirmed by the judges”.

TKU Voted No.1 by Business for 14 Successive Years

Cheers Magazine recently announced the results of its annual “1000 Enterprises Favorite College Graduates” survey. In 2011, for the 14th consecutive year, Tamkang University placed first among all private universities, reflecting the high esteem in which Taiwanese enterprises hold Tamkang University graduates.

From the 13th to the 15th of April, TKU’s Tamsui and Lanyang campuses were home to the 2011 Institutional Evaluation. This involved the institutional evaluation itself (on April 13 and 14) as well as a ‘Gender Equity Education Appraisal’ and a Campus Environment and Safety Management Performance Evaluation’ (on April 15).

The first TKU “Young Entrepreneur” Competition

In a new initiative that aims to nurture innovation in TKU students, the TKU Office of Research and Development, along with the TKU Champion Incubator Center, have established the TKU “Young Entrepreneur” Competition. The competition encourages innovation. It will provide students who have creative and feasible business ideas with the financial and market-based resources to turn their ideas into reality. Prizes for the first placed group will include NT$30,000 and the possibility of becoming the next young CEO thanks to the help of the Champion Incubator Center, which will assist the winning group in finding a suitable venture capital company to fund their idea.
