Clearing the Smoke at Tamkang

As of Aug 1, 2011, Tamkang University is officially a smoke-free school. Even the “smoking areas” have now become no-smoke zones. An instructor in the TKU Office of Military Education and Training, Liang Ping-he, described some of the ‘quit smoking’ activities held in recent years designed to reduce the numbers of smokers. These include the holding of smoking prevention courses and lectures; assembling teams of volunteers to go around the campus and encourage smokers to quit smoking; holding elections for ‘quit smoking’ ambassadors; and establishing quit smoking clubs and classes.

The 9th Tamkang Cup Table Tennis Invitational

The 9th Tamkang Cup Table Tennis Invitational was held on the 15th and 16th of Oct at the TKU Shao-Mo Memorial Gymnasium. The annual tournament is organized by the Office of Physical Education, with help from the TKU representative table tennis team and table tennis association. This year, a total of 800 students in 78 teams took part in the competition. Tamkang University claimed first place in the women’s alumni team category and third place in the women’s singles competition.

Selling Taiwanese Culture Online

The TKU Innovative Center for Cultural and Creative Industries is set to hold a brand new competition starting from Nov. 16. The “Taiwan Culture and Creative International Competition” will provide a platform from which entrants must take practical steps to sell a range of items using online marketing techniques. They will be required to sell arts and crafts pieces, such as aboriginal glass bead necklaces, dyed materials and other hand-made art work.

The Private University Development Initiative

In the Ministry of Education’s ‘Private University Development Initiative’, TKU again came first among private universities in the “comprehensive university” category, receiving a reward subsidy of over NT $110 million.

Innovative Research Projects Receive Grants

This year, a total of 27 TKU students successfully applied for National Science Council (NSC) research grants to conduct research projects in their area of specialization. Of these 27 research grants, the College of Engineering received the most, with a total of 17 grants; the Lanyang Campus also received subsidies for the first time (two in total); the College of Management and College of Business each received three grants; the College of Foreign Languages and Literatures and the College of Science also each received one subsidy.

TKU Teachers Awarded by MOE

The Director of the TKU Center for Teacher Education and Institute of Curriculum and Instruction, Pei-fen Sung, along with TKU Department of Educational Technology alumnus, You Yu-xian, recently won awards for outstanding efforts in education. The awards were issued by the ROC Ministry of Education.
