Pushing the Frontiers of Globalization

Part of TKU’s strategy for future development is strengthening relations with its partner universities overseas. As such, a small group of senior TKU faculty from the Lanyang Campus recently visited several partner universities in the U.S. The group consisted of the Dean of the College of Global Entrepreneurial Development, Prof. Liou Ay-hwa, the Chair of the Department of International Tourism Management, Dr. Chien Mu Yeh, and the Chair of the Department of Global Political Economy, Dr. Cheng Chin-mo.

A New Platform for Compulsory Club Courses

From the beginning of the 2011-2012 academic year, all first year students at Tamkang have been required to take a student society course entitled “Learning and Practice of Clubs”. After the implementation of the course, a greater burden was placed on student society leaders, who then had to keep track of information on far more students. A new centralized system was required to simplify these processes.

Closer Relations in Northeast China

From Jan. 31st to Feb 7th, a delegation from the Tamkang Department of Public Administration made a goodwill visit to four major universities in Northeast China. The delegation consisted of 14 faculty members and students from the Department of Public Administration, including the department Chair, Dr. Irving Huang. The Group visited Jilin, Heilongjiang, Liaoning, and Northeastern University, each of which received the visitors with warm hospitality.

The Relocation of the TKU Weights Room

Starting from the beginning of the current academic year, restrictions have been placed on who can use the weights room in the Shao-Mo Memorial Gymnasium. The weights room is now only open for classroom instruction, meaning that individual students, ...

“Floating” Toward Greater Exposure

On Feb. 11, a drum group from the TKU Alumni Association of Northern California took part in the San Francisco Chinese New Year Parade. The parade was organized jointly by the San Francisco Chinese Chamber of Commerce and Southwest Airlines, and featured performance from over 100 such entertainment groups.

The Lunar New Year Calligraphy Fair

On Feb 11, the Lunar New Year Calligraphy Fair was held at Ketagalan Boulevard, Taipei City, in front of the Presidential Building. The event was organized by the Chinese Calligraphy Association, Taiwan, together with Tamkang University.

The Global Boycott of Elsevier

In January this year, Timothy Gowers, a mathematics professor at Cambridge University, expressed criticism of the business practices used by one of the world’s leading academic journals, Elsevier. His criticisms were presented in an essay format and posted on his personal blog under the heading “Elsevier – my part in its downfall”. The posting resulted in calls to boycott the ‘journal giant’ and the establishment of a formal boycott website, to which 5,800 academics and scholars have already put their name.

TKU Again Number One among Private Universities

Each year, 104 Job Bank and Global Vision conduct a range of surveys that provide insight into the strengths and weaknesses of universities in Taiwan. The most recently published survey relates to four essential elements of university development: 1) the strength of each university in producing sought-after graduates; 2) overall competitiveness; 3) strength of student administration; and 4) the strength of the overall academic environment.
