Students Reliving their Childhood at Tamkang

On March 24, the Black Swan Exhibition Hall, Tamsui Campus, was home to the “4WD Final Matchup”, which featured 30 remote control mini-4WDs. Organized by the Department of Architecture, the event provided a platform for students to relive their childhood by racing miniature race cars on a winding track constructed by architecture students.

Reasonable Truancy?

For three days, from March 26-28, The TKU Debate Club held a debate at the Chinese Palace-style Classrooms, Tamsui Campus. The debate, a round-robin style competition consisting of six teams and 18 participants, was based on a thought-provoking blog article written by Harvard graduate Joey Chung, which advocates the need for “reasonable truancy”. In the article “You Have a Responsibility to Skip Class” (written in Chinese), Chung argues that, just like in any business transaction, students – who are often required to fork out substantial tuition fees – should skip class if the service they are paying for – namely, academic instruction – is not up to standard.

World Book and Copyright Day

To coincide with World Book and Copyright Day, (April 23) the TKU library will this week hold a World Book and Copyright series of events, including a theme-based book exhibition, a number of special lectures, and an exhibition on related products. The first event will be a detective fiction book display held at the “Active Reading” section, level 2 of the TKU library.

Outstanding Youth Receive Recognition

The Office of Student Affairs recently chose 14 students to participate in the 2012 Youth Festival Outstanding Youth Contest. Of the 14 students, one was selected as a national representative for Tamkang University. Lin Hao-wei, a fourth year student from the TKU Department of Multicultural and Linguistic Studies, was recognized for his efforts at an award ceremony held at the Chientan Youth Activity Center on March 29. The ceremony honored approximately 100 outstanding youth from universities around Taiwan, who were each congratulated personally by the President of Taiwan, Mr. Ma Ying-jeou.

Department Open Day at Tamkang

On April 7, Tamkang University held the TKU Department Open Day at both its Tamsui and Lanyang campuses. The annual event enables high school students from all over Taipei to better understand Tamkang University and the unique features of each of TKU’s academic departments. This year, a record-breaking 5000 students attended the event, many of whom came to take part in interviews as part of their application to study at Tamkang.

The 2012 Academic Development Conference

In order to better understand the achievements and features of the TKU Administrative Development Scheme, to discuss the content of work objectives proposed by faculty for the 2012 academic year, and to prepare for the assignment of funds and subsidies in the coming academic year, on 13th April TKU held the 2012 Academic Development Conference at the Chueh Sheng International Conference Hall.
