Contests to Test Students Knowledge of the EU

In October this year, The European Union Centre in Taiwan is set to hold two major contests that will test entrants’ knowledge of Europe as well as their PowerPoint skills. The first is The “Europe Trivia King” contest, scheduled to be held on the 8th October (preliminary round) and 17th October (finals), and offering a total prize reward of NT $20,000. The second contest is the “EU Innovative PPT” Contest, in which entrants must create a PowerPoint presentation, 40-60 slides long, on the history of EU development. The winners will receive a cash prize of NT $30,000.

The “Echinacea Movement” and National Teacher’s Day
To coincide with the series of drug-free activities, the Office of Military Education and Training recently set up an official “Echinacea Movement” Facebook fan site. To support the movement, please refer to the website http://facebook.com/tkunodrug.

Today (Sept 27) at noon, the Office of Military Education and Training held a National Teacher’s Day activity at the Fu Yuan Garden, Tamsui Campus. National Teacher’s Day is an annual event that gives students the opportunity to express gratitude for the instruction and guidance they receive from their teachers throughout the year. The event began with a Lion Dance performance by the Overseas Chinese Student Club, followed by a martial arts demonstration staged by the Tae Kwon Do Club and a number of touching song and dance performances.

Rainbow Candy

On the evenings of September 28 and 29, TKU’s Experimental Theater Group will hold two beginning-of-semester performances at the Experimental Theater, Tamsui Campus. The performances involve a play named “Rainbow Candy”, which portrays four childhood friends who, after facing the challenges thrown at them by life, come to realize that life is simply one continuous “game” in which you cannot look back.

Courses for Quality Control in Education

On the 12th and 21st September, the TKU Office of Quality Assurance and Audit held two quality control courses: the Quality Control Circle Education Training Course and the Counselor Training Course. A total of 30 TKU faculty and staff attended the courses. The Director of the Office of Quality Assurance and Audit, Dr. Pai Di-Ching, explained that by offering such courses, TKU is not only working to promote the Tamkang Quality Control Circle (QCC) Competition, but also equipping TKU employees with the skills needed to improve their own job efficiency and to provide guidance and counseling to teams entering the TKU QCC competition.

A Forum for Disabled Students

On September 19 at the Chueh Sheng International Conference Hall, the Center of Resources for the Blind held a discussion forum for disabled students and their families. The event was hosted by the President of TKU, Dr. Flora Chia-I Chang, who welcomed new freshmen into the TKU family and explained that the TKU system for supporting and counseling disabled students has been refined and improved on consistently for over four decades. She noted that all TKU departments had measures in place to assist such students and that, each year, TKU gradually improves the disabled-friendly environment at the Tamsui Campus.

The New Office of Student Affairs
The 4th floor of the Business and Management Building recently received a drastic makeover. Students who come to the new Office of Student Affairs can invariably be heard saying “Wow! It’s so nice and pleasant here!” The renovations were undertaken during the recent summer holidays in order to provide students with a comfortable space to study or just simply “hang out”.

For most of the university, the drill involved on-the-spot instruction on what to do in the case of an earthquake; while the College of Liberal Arts held a practice evacuation exercise, in which all faculty, staff and students from the College were led out of the building by assigned personnel and into the adjacent parking lot.

Rewarding Teachers for a Lifetime of Selfless Service

To show gratitude for the efforts of long-term teachers, the Ministry of Education recently (August 29) held an Award Ceremony and a Presidential Luncheon. During the award ceremony, teachers who have worked for a period of 10 to 40 years were rewarded with a special “lifetime service subsidy”.
