The “Echinacea Movement” and National Teacher’s Day
Today (Sept 27) at noon, the Office of Military Education and Training held a National Teacher’s Day activity at the Fu Yuan Garden, Tamsui Campus. National Teacher’s Day is an annual event that gives students the opportunity to express gratitude for the instruction and guidance they receive from their teachers throughout the year. The event began with a Lion Dance performance by the Overseas Chinese Student Club, followed by a martial arts demonstration staged by the TKU Tae Kwon Do Club and a number of touching song and dance performances.

Pomelo and Mooncake on Mid-Autumn Festival

It’s that time of the year again: when the International Office celebrates Mid-Autumn Festival by giving away free snacks. The snacks included pomelos and mooncakes, which are foods traditionally eaten during the festival. The activity drew over 200 students, including foreign students, overseas Chinese and Mainland Chinese students.

On the evening of September 26, the TKU Lanyang Campus held its annual Mid-Autumn Festival celebration. Attended by close to 600 students, teachers and staff, the event was a dinner under the stars with music, conversation, and a spectacular view of the Yilan nightline. Not only was the evening a celebration of Mid-Autumn Festival, it was also a welcome-back dinner for students who recently returned from their junior year abroad.

On August 26, the TKU Carrie Chang Fine Arts Center held a Digital Painting Exhibition. The exhibition displayed the work of 30 well-known painters who used the Tamkang University e-Calligraphy Pen to produce their artwork. At the opening ceremony of the event, the TKU President, Dr. Flora Chia-I Chang, explained that creating the e-Calligraphy Pen was a joint project involving the Carrie Chang Fine Arts Center, the Department of Chinese Literature, and the Department of Computer Science and Information Engineering. She praised the technology, calling it the ideal example of collaboration between academia and industry. “It not only extends traditional forms of art and calligraphy, but also represents TKU’s commitment to cross-discipline innovation”, she stated.

Tamkang Alumna Receives Oscar Honor

Rachel Chen, and alumna from the TKU Department of Mass Communications, served as one of the associate producers on a recently-released movie “Touch of the Light”. Since hitting the big screen in September, the film has received rave reviews and become a box office sensation.

The TKU Department of Spanish Turns 50

The TKU Department of Spanish is turning 50! To celebrate, on Tuesday October 2nd it will be holding a four-day exhibition at the Black Swan Exhibition Hall called the “Spanish and Latin American Ceramic Art Exhibition”. It will also hold a Spanish Film Exhibition on the 5th Floor Non-Book Information Section of the TKU Library. The Ceramic Art Exhibition will showcase a wide range of ceramic artwork from Spain and Latin America. Among the pieces on display will be ocarinas, which are small, intricately-designed ceramic wind instruments with holes carved into them so that they can be played like the flute. While appreciating the art, visitors can also sample high quality red wines imported especially from Argentina.

One Week and Three International Visits

Last week, visitors from three overseas universities came to the TKU Tamsui Campus. On the afternoon of September 24, the President of the Latin University of Panama, Prof. Modaldo Tunon, visited TKU to talk about future prospects for academic collaboration. The first stop on his itinerary was a meeting with TKU President, Dr. Flora Chia-I Chang. During the meeting, President Modaldo Tunon proposed the signing of an academic partnership between the two universities. The meeting was followed by an informal discussion between the visiting president and senior TKU staff, as well as a tour of the Tamsui Campus. President Modaldo Tunon visited various campus facilities and was particularly impressed by the state-of-the-art TKU Library and the Tamkang University Maritime Museum.
