A Visit from Hungkuang University

On Dec 14, 2012, a delegation of 80 members from Hungkuang University (HKU, located in Central Taiwan) came to the TKU Tamsui Campus. The group consisted of the Director of the HKU Extracurricular Department and the Aboriginal Affairs and Volunteer Development Center, Chen Ming-Kuo, as well as other HKU faculty and staff, and leaders of HKU student clubs. The purpose of the visit was to discuss and learn about innovative ways to enhance administrative and organizational processes employed at both universities. The visitors were greeted by the TKU aboriginal student club, which held an aboriginal dance performance in their honor.

Double the Christmas Festivity at Tamkang

On 20th December, both the Department of French and the Graduate Institute of International Affairs and Strategic Studies (GIISS) held large-scale Christmas parties.

Last week, from December 17 – 22 (2012), 36 TKU student associations came together to hold the “End-of-the-World” Christmas Fair. The fair was held on Poster Street, Tamsui Campus, and featured a variety of creative Christmas-style stalls. One of the more popular stalls sold gingerbread men, while another allowed students to design and make their own gingerbread houses. Three freshmen classmates, who made a gingerbread house together, said “this is our first time making a gingerbread house. It’s not easy to do, as the syrup sticks to your fingers. But it’s really a lot of fun!”

Recognition at the International Computer Symposium 2012

On December 14, 2012, a TKU associate professor from the Department of Computer Science and Information Engineering (Dr. Hwang Shin-Jia) and two department alumni (Sung Yun-hao and Ji ren-fu) attended the 2012 International Computer Symposium (ICS), in which they received the “Best Thesis Award”.

A Partnership to Promote Chemistry

The Mobile Chemistry Lab began its journey in the autumn of 2011. To date, it has travelled over 10,000 km and been to high schools across Taiwan proper as well as nearby offshore islands. On the afternoon of December 18, shortly after the mobile lab arrived at Wanli Junior High School, New Taipei City, a Signing Ceremony was held between the Dean of the TKU College of Science (Dr. Wang Bo-Cheng) and the Deputy Director of the New Taipei City Department of Education (Kung Ya-Wen).

A Half Century of Spanish Instruction

On December 15, 2012, the TKU Department of Spanish held a 50th Anniversary Department Banquet. The Banquet drew distinguished guests and outstanding alumni, who together celebrated five decades of Spanish instruction at Tamkang. The banquet was also attended by the President of TKU, Dr. Flora Chia-I Chang, who delivered an opening speech. President Chang noted that TKU was the first university in Taiwan to set up a Department of Spanish. Over the past five decades, the Department has produced countless numbers of successful professionals working in various fields. “Many alumni live overseas. This anniversary celebration has given them the chance to return to their alma mater, to catch up and to maintain closer contact”, said President Chang.

Subsidies for Published Papers

The TKU Office of Human Resources recently released the list of faculty members who will receive financial subsidies for having their work published in the following major international journals: A&HCI, SSCI, SCI, EI, THCI Core, and TSSCI.

Kwei Lun Mei Crowned Queen of Asian Pacific Films
Kwei Lun-mei in the movie “Girlfriend, Boyfriend” had to really shave her head on camera.

TKU Department of French alumna and well-known Taiwanese actress Kwei Lun-Mei recently received the Best Actress award at the 2012 Asia Pacific Film Festival. She won the award for her widely acclaimed performance in the movie “Girlfriend, Boyfriend”, in which she played “Lin Mei-bao”, a fictitious character who finds herself in a love triangle that evolves over two decades.
