The Winter Team Service Groups Show Warm Hearts In the Cold Season

【Reported by Yi-feng Lu, Tamkang Times】This winter break Tamkang University sent 26 different teams around the nation to offer social services. The College of Science’s group went to Liu Ying Junior High School in Tainan City and the North Star Group went to Dao Xiang Elementary School in Hua Lian County to provide educational and fun activities about Chinese language and history.

【Reported by Yi-feng Lu, Tamkang Times】It’s the start of the new semester and accredited student group classes have begun. This is the third year of accredited student group classes and the first class was lead by TA’s with the theme of magic in the universe as a means illustration. This class activity used a game-like format to make students memorize and describe all of the student groups. .

In attendance was Executive Director from the Office of Alumni Service and Resources Development, Chun-Young Perng, Dean of the Department of Innovative Information and Technology, Shih-jung Wu, Dean of the Department of International Tourism Management, Chien-mu Yeh, Dean of the Department of Global Economics, Cheng-hao Pao, Assistant Professor of the Department of American English Language and Culture, Gutierrez Jannette Wang, President of the Worldwide Federation of Alumni Association, Mr. Loo Soon, Board Supervisor, Li-su Zhong, Secretary General, Jing-ling You and 40 other esteemed alumni.

【Reported by An-jia Chen, Tamkang Times】Professor Sarah Michelle Lee, from the Singapore Polytechnic Design University, brought 18 students to visit Tamkang University’s Department of Information and Communication for an exchange on February 17th. It was a great display of TKU’s international education system as the students from both universities engaged in an enthusiastic discussion. This event was planned by professor of the Department of Information and Communication, Chih-I Lai.

Alumni are Welcome to Register for 2014 Conference Held In Vancouver Canada

【Reported by Xue-yi Wu, Tamkang Times】The Tamkang University Worldwide Federation of Alumni Association (WFAA) will hold their 2014 annual conference on the third floor of the Vancouver Convention Center on August 24th. It is estimated that there will be over 300 alumni in attendance from all over the world, including America and Canada.

【Reported by Yi-ling Huang, Tamkang Times】After the start of the semester, an art banquet was held as a contribution from the Carrie Chang Fine Arts Center. The banquet was also a modern print/graphic art exhibition that displayed 78 fine pieces of work represented by 41 different artists. Participants were able to peer into the fascinating and unique creations of the various art work. Dean of the Carrie Chang Fine Arts Center, Ben-hang Chang, stated, “In the West, graphic and printed art have gotten a lot of attention. So in this exhibition we have especially selected Taiwanese artists that are very skilled in this particular trade. The colors and contours of these products show the distinct personality of each individual artist. This is quite a rare opportunity for both students and faculty to observe such a high-caliber level of artistry.

China Airlines and the Department of Aerospace Engineering Cooperate to Create New Curriculum

【Reported by Yan-ling Chen, Tamkang Times】”We have received a great gift from China Airlines,” says Dean of the Department of Aerospace Engineering, Jing-min Tang. Starting from the end of April the Department of Aerospace Engineering will work in cooperation with China Airlines in the creation of academic-industry curriculum. 30 students from Tamkang University will be allowed the opportunity to test into the China Airline training program. Min-jing Tang stated, “Last year there were only thirty individuals allowed to take this test. This year seeing that 30 students from TKU were selected, promises that more students will have a chance to participate in this hands on learning experience. For this test, students must score above 650. Students who passed this test and are graduating this year will have an opportunity to go overseas to America for training.

【Reported by Jia-wen Lin, Tamkang Times】On February 7th President Ma Ying Jiu gave praise to former professor of the Graduate Institute of International Affairs and Strategic Studies, Hsien-chung Niu, on the tenth anniversary of his passing. Dean of the Graduate Institute of International Affairs and Strategic Studies, Ming-hsien Wong, stated, “Not only was Hsien-chung Niu the number one strategic researcher in the Cross-Strait region, he was also an iconic author. He brought honor to himself and to this university as well.

【Reported by Ya-ting Li, Tamkang Times】The Webometrics Rankings of the World Universities (WRWU) has ranked Tamkang University’s website as 513th in the world, 90th in Asia and 10th in the nation. Chief Information Officer, Ming-dar Hwang, expressed that aside from the main page, TKU’s website receives the most attention in the Department of Physics and the Department of Electrical Engineering. He emphasized the importance of continually modifying the information on the site in order to raise it’s standing worldwide and that its critical for professors to continue personalizing their section of the site. He anticipates that WRWU’s index will serve as a great form of promotion and will give both teachers and students the opportunity to interact with the website on a more intimate level.
