Wayo Women’s University Visits TKU to Discuss Long Distance Study Program

【Reported by Yu-pin Lin, Tamkang Times】Wayo Women’s University’s (WWU) Dean of Academic Affairs, Kadowaki Yukiko, and professor of the Department of English Language and Studies, Takakuda Katsuko came to Tamkang University on the 26th of February for a visit. Professor of the Department of Japanese Language, Chun-young Perng, and Assistant Professor of the Department of Japanese Language, Hsin-yu Shih, met with the honored guests and showed them TKU’s long-distance study program.

The World Baseball Classic Website Breaks 316,000,000 Hits

【Reported by Yi-feng Lu, Tamkang Times】The World Baseball Classic (WBC) website reached over 316,000,000 hits on February 25th. According to the statistics of the world-renowned baseball website at Alexa (www.alexa.com), tku.edu.tw website users account for 39% of WBC’s traffic, placing this university’s website users at the top of the charts. Director of the WBC and Dean of the College of Liberal Arts, Sinn-cheng Lin, stated, “Setting up WBC at Tamkang University not only gives more browsing opportunities to TKU users, it also mutually brings traffic from both sides. So we are pleased to help in this exchange of good energy.”

Annual Discussion for Disabled and Impaired Students Takes Place

【Reported by Yi-ling Huang, Tamkang Times】On February 25th Tamkang University's Resource Center for Blind and Visually Impaired Students held a meeting in the Cheuh-sheng International Conference Hall for the, “2013 Second Semester Guidance Meeting for Disabled Students”. Dean of Academic Affairs and Director of the TKU Resource Center for Blind and Visually Impaired Students, Huan-chao Keh, stated, “We are the earliest institute in the Nation to open its doors for disabled-students and because we have created an environment that is tailored to the needs of different students such as impaired vision software and hardware facilities, we have the largest population of disabled-students in all of Taiwan. We have developed programs that give both study opportunities and employment opportunities to our challenged population. Our university must use our utmost effort to continue to create an environment that is user-friendly and in this discussion I hope we can take on more helpful ideas.”

【Reported by Jing-ya Su, Xue-yi Wu, Jia-yun Cai, Ya-ting Li, Yu-pin Lin, Tamkang Times】This semester really has begun with a bang. Former Golden Eagle Award winner, Maggie Shouyiing Hsu, has returned to Tamkang University to begin a new class. She is a certified Project Management Institute instructor and has multiple international management licenses. She has worked together with the College of Engineering to design a specialized management curriculum. A class like this would normally cost about 30,000 to take in the business world. Third-year physics student You-zhi Yan stated, “Initially I heard that a lot of people recommended this course. Then I did a search online and found out the teacher was amazing. So I signed right up.” There were a lot of students that couldn’t sign up because the class was full, but they still came to listen in on the lecture. Third-year Business and Management student, Jia-de Lin, stated, “I joined cause I wanted to improve my English ability. When I heard that the instructor was donating the funds for this class to help homeless animals, I was really moved.”

【Reported by Bo-xian Lu, Tamkang Times】Vice President of Administration Po-yuan Kao lead an expedition with Dean of the College of Science, Bo-cheng Wang, Dean of the Chemistry Department, Jyh-hsing Lin, and 6 Chemistry professors to visit Better Chemistry Better Life (BCBL) on February 26th. They had the privilege of meeting with TKU alumni and Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the BCBL, Ding-chuan Chen, BCBL’s two Vice Presidents Der Gun Chou and Jau-wen Lin, assistant manager Shyh-fong Chen, Vice Chairman Keh Loong Chen, Vice Chairman York W. Chen and Director Da-jong Yi for a discussion in the development of an academic-industry exchange program.

【Reported by Wen-yuan Zheng, Tamkang Times】Tamkang University has received an award from the Ministry of Education for the implementation of the “Work Study Program.” On February 27th Dean of the Office of Human Resources, Tung-wen Chung, accepted the award on behalf of TKU as he expressed, “Our university was able to quickly implement this policy that encourages employees to advance their educational level because of the similarities that it carries with our current policies. One of the most identifying characteristics of TKU is the active encouragement of the staff and faculty to continue learning and improving. It’s great to be able to receive this award, but the development and improvement of the university is the greatest reward we could ask for.”
