World Book Day is Celebrated in Chueh-sheng Memorial Library

【Reported by Jing-ya Su, Tamkang Times 】In celebration of the 2014 World Book Day, the Chueh-sheng Memorial Library is holding an event titled, “Read Classics and Good Books.” An exhibit has been especially arranged with an abundance of world literature and films on the second floor for spectators to view and participate in this international event. Stickers will be given for oral reading contests and other activities that will allow students to win prizes.

The 2014 Cross-Strait Youth Leadership Camp

【Reported by Yi-qun Yang, Tamkang Times】On March 29th the Graduate Institute of China Studies and the New Taiwan Peace Foundation held the 2014 Cross-Strait Youth Leadership Camp. This camp was designed to strengthen their understanding of democracy and social services through an international perspective. This conference also served as a congratulatory message to President Ying Jiu Ma and Vice President Den-yih Wu. 60 outstanding students from well known universities from both in Taiwan and China were selected for this year’s camp that focused on the theme of public participation and cultural exploration. Chairman of the Straits Exchange Foundation, Join-sane Lin, Deputy Minister of Mainland Affairs Council, Chu-chia Lin, and Chairman of the New Taiwan Peace Foundation, Wen-cong Deng presented lectures while interacting with the students for follow up questions.

【Reported by An-jia Chen, Tamkang Times】The results for the 2014 Cyber Young Lions’ Taiwanese Social Media Competition have been announced. A student organization from the Department of Information and Communication including Xin-jia Zhuang, Mei-fang Zhuang, Jian-yu Lin, and one student from the Department of Statistics, Da-yu Yang, were awarded 3rd place. Also TKU alumni from the Department of Information and Communication, Pei-Han Hsiuan, received first place in the professional division and will represent Taiwan in the Cyber Young Lions’ Competition in Cannes Lions, France.

【Reported by Tian-ran Xia, Tamkang Times】The International and Mainland Guidance Section held the yearly Spring Culture Tour on March 22nd and 23rd. Accompanying the 91 international students was Vice President of International Affairs, Wan-chin Tai and Dean of International Affairs, Pei-wha Chilee. Wan-chin Tai happily expressed, “It’s always our desire to really let the international students have a chance to enjoy the mountains, bodies of water and beautiful scenery of Taiwan. We want it to be a memorable experience with lots of different flavors that they will be able to take with them in their hearts when they return to home.”

【Reported by Jia-wen Lin, Tamkang Times】After 2012 the Department of Aerospace Engineering has been researching Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAV). On March 22nd and 23rd they participated in the 2014 Taiwanese Unmanned Aerial Vehicle Creative Design Competition and received excellent recognition in three different categories. The UAV known as Orion received first place for Aerial Engine Design, first place in Aerodynamic Force, and third place in Technical Manufacturing. Professor of the Department of Aerospace Engineering, Der-ming Ma, stated, “Unlike the single winged plane design of last year, this time we made a tandem aircraft.”

【Reported by Qian-wen Pan, Tamkang Times】Last month on the 23rd of March, the College of Education and the New Taipei City Government cooperated together to hold a forum titled, “The Challenge of Changing Academics for the Better.” They invited an honored guest from the the University of Tokyo, Professor Sato, to present a lecture on Community Studies and Practical Challenges.
